Jesus - (33) Gentle, but passionate and driven. He exudes charisma and has “it”. People love him and are drawn to him like a moth to flame. Think Mick Jagger, David Bowie, John Lennon, Andy Warhol and Mother Theresa all rolled into one charismatic package. He started a movement that he knows will make the world a better place, but should he do the ultimate deed? Is it worth it? How far does he take this? THE ROLE OF JESUS HAS BEEN CAST; we are seeking an OFF STAGE UNDERSTUDY.
Mary Magdalene - (25-35) A survivor, a healer, brings calm and introspection to those around her. She has lived a life, and knows the highs and lows of that life. She has great capacity for love, but isn’t sure she knows how. She is experiencing something new, and different for the first time and doesn’t really know what it might mean for her in the future.
Judas - (25-35) Passionate, driven, believer in the cause. Has been with Jesus since the beginning. He knows where they have been, and he is aware of where they are headed. He has concerns. He is strong-willed and willing to put it all out there as needed to make his case. He might have to do things that will make him unliked, but is it his duty?
Pontius Pilate - Governor of Judea. Confident strong leader, but really wants to be liked. He is haunted, and wants to be sure he does everything right. Indecision is a real bitch, causing him to lose a lot of sleep and wrestle with his dreams.
Peter - (20-30) One of the 12, he is gentle and loving. He is also scared of the world around him, he knows it could crash down, and he could be in big trouble. Like the rest of the “12” he knows the world is changing, and he wants to be part of the future.
Simon Zealotes - (20-30) A true fanatic for the movement. He is all in, all the time. He will do whatever is needed to prove his devotion and love. Filled with passion, filled with convictions, and desperate to have those around him see how much he believes. He is one of the “12” and he hopes to be the best one of the “12” - the one Jesus himself loves more than anyone else.
King Herod - (25-45) A party boy - inherited his kingdom, but didn’t have to work for it. He is glamorous, he is “now”, wants to play, but don’t underestimate him; he is vicious when he needs to be. He won’t be toyed with, but he will toy with YOU.
Annas - (30-40) High Priest, he sees what is happening and is sure it is going to topple the current power structure. He wants to deal with it and take action. He is very sure of his opinions and his own capacity to know what’s what.
Caiphas - (35-70) High Priest, he wants to stay in power, and is willing to do what it takes once he perceives a threat.
Followers of Jesus - all believe the world is in desperate need of regime change. They want a new tomorrow, one which they will be recalled as the ones who made it happen. They bask in Jesus’s glow, and their fame is entirely attached to his.
Ensemble - (20-40) A variety of singer/dancers who play multiple roles who are energetic and versatile to bring the world of Jesus Christ Superstar to life. All need to be strong pop/rock singers. We are looking for a range of dance abilities from STRONG movers to advanced dancers. All styles encouraged. The show will incorporate various styles including jazz, contemporary and hip hop. Special skills in the areas of acrobatics, break dancing and tumbling are encouraged.
