International City Theatre 2026 Season

I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE

Book & Lyrics: Joe DiPietro
Music: Jimmy Roberts

Director: Barry Pearl
Music Director: Dr. D. Gary Busby
Choreographer: Becca Sweitzer
Rehearsals Start: 1/27/26
Previews: 2/18/26 & 2/19/26
Opens: 2/20/26
Closes: 3/8/26

SYNOPSIS:

I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change is presented in the form of a series of vignettes connected by the central theme of love and relationships. The play's tagline is “Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives and in-laws, but were afraid to admit.” With few exceptions, the scenes stand independent of the others but progress in a fashion designed to suggest an overall arc to relationships throughout one's life. A first date, for example, comes before scenes dealing with marriage, and scenes dealing with marriage come before those dealing with childbearing. Despite the large number of characters, this production (as with the original) is done with a cast of four.

SEEKING:

[MALE-PRESENTING PERFORMERS (2)] Male, early to mid 30s, any ethnicity. Two men who take on roles ranging from a young man on a first date, to an older husband reflecting on a long marriage, to a man in his late 70s looking for love in the strangest of places. Adept with comedy and strong vocally. Comfortable with part singing (4 Part harmonies). Should move well.
VOCAL RANGES: Man #1 (C3 - G#4) & Man #2 (Db3 - Gb4)

[FEMALE-PRESENTING PERFORMERS (2)] Female, early to mid 30s, any ethnicity. Two women who navigate roles from a woman on a disastrous date, to a new mother, to a woman in her late 70s who winds up finding love in the strangest of places. Adept with comedy and strong vocally. Comfortable with part singing (4 Part harmonies). Should move well.
VOCAL RANGES: Woman #1 (A3 - Bb5) & Woman #2 (F#3 - Db5)

WARSAW

Opens: 5/1/26
Closes: 5/17/26

SYNOPSIS:

74-year-old Krystyna fights for life in a hospital as four people wait and reveal the reasons why her survival is vital to them. But even if she survives, is it too late for love? What purpose or meaning remains for any of them? Will Krystyna have their answers?

After a career in teaching, Paul Webb wrote his first play at age 50. FOUR NIGHTS IN KNARESBOROUGH was produced in London, had a national tour and drew the attention of the film industry. He was commissioned by Stephen Spielberg, Michael Mann and Ridley Scott, working closely with all three over a number of years. He wrote Selma, a film about the civil rights struggle in Alabama. He was nominated for Best Screenplay, Original by International Press Academy.

[RACHEL] Female, early to mid 30s, any ethnicity. An anaesthetist; attractive, confident. A driven young doctor whose brother Jonathan died in the Trade Center.

[KLAUS] Male. A 79-year-old voluntary hospital worker. An elderly but still-vigorous man, Klaus believes Krystyna is someone he loved long ago in Poland.

[KRYSTYNA] Female. A youthful, 74-year-old widow from Warsaw, Poland, who is fighting for her life in a hospital after a car accident.

[DAVID] Male, mid 30s, any ethnicity. A handsome Wall Street broker, David is Rachel’s adoring ex-fiancé, who was rejected in the fall-out from Jonathan’s death.

ALLEGRA

American Premiere
Playwright: Peter Quilter
Director: TBD
Rehearsals Start: 5/29/26
Previews: 6/10/26 & 6/11/26
Opens: 6/12/26
Closes: 6/28/26

SYNOPSIS:

This is a comedy (with music) for 4 actors centered around an eccentric woman who is always singing - in her mind, but also often in public (whether they like it or not!) This is a funny but also very touching play.

Allegra is full of joy. So much of it that she cannot stop herself from bursting into song. At home, in the street, even in shops and restaurants. Sometimes the music is only a fantasy in her head. But at other times, it results in a loud and disruptive performance that causes chaos in the village. Her brother Ronen and housekeeper Anna must somehow control her eccentricities and avoid more angry visits by the local policeman. However, is this possible without destroying the great happiness that fills Allegra's heart? At a time when the world can be dark and pessimistic, is it right to rob us of her shining light? This new comedy is full of laughter. Yet the play is also a touching and emotional examination of how, sometimes, the most beautiful of minds can start to disappear. The show includes several wonderful song sequences that add extra magic to this colorful, funny and moving story.

SEEKING:

[ALLEGRA] Female, 40s, any ethnicity. An eccentric woman of middle age who is always singing. A great singing voice isn’t required, but this role does happily and fearlessly sing throughout.

[RONEN] Male, 30s – 40s, any ethnicity. Allegra’s brother.

[ANNA] Female, 20s – 30s, any ethnicity. Allegra’s Czech housekeeper.

[OFFICER ROGERS] Male, Any age or ethnicity. A policeman (smaller role).

CONSCIENCE

Los Angeles Premiere
By Joe DiPietro
Director: Caryn Desai
Rehearsals Start: 8/4/26
Previews: 8/26/26 & 8/27/26
Opens: 8/28/26
Closes: 9/13/26

SYNOPSIS:

Margaret Chase Smith was a woman of firsts. In 1940, she was the first woman elected by the state of Maine to serve in Congress; nine years later she was the first woman the state elected to the Senate. And in 1950, she became the first senator to stand on the Senate floor and publicly rebuke Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin, who rose to power using post–World War II anti-Communist hysteria and ruined the lives of those who opposed him. Margaret Chase Smith’s “Declaration of Conscience” speech was a public act of defiance at a time when both Democrats and Republicans were cowed into silence for fear of retribution. It came at a cost: She was shunned by her colleagues, challenged in a primary, and McCarthy threatened to expose her personal secrets. CONSCIENCE is the story of a remarkable woman who stood up for what was right and refused to back down.

“A timely boxing match of a history play… CONSCIENCE portrays [Margaret Chase] Smith… as a dry-witted hero with the rare courage to take on a lying bully who is sowing chaos, ruining reputations and threatening the very fabric of the nation.” — The New York Times.

“CONSCIENCE presents a slice of history, one that will resonate with a modern audience. The show portrays an insightful view of McCarthyism while thoughtfully addressing themes of women in politics, the dangers of demagoguery, and how truth and reason must prevail in society.” — BroadwayWorld.

“… DiPietro avoids cheap political shots, focusing instead on the intense interpersonal dynamics. [Margaret Chase] Smith is a powerful, complex character and… McCarthy slowly unravels before your eyes.” — Front Row Center.

SEEKING:

[MARGARET CHASE SMITH] Female, 50s, white. The junior senator from Maine. No nonsense with a firm elegance and caustic wit. A committed moderate, forever independent.

[SENATOR JOE MCCARTY] Male, early 40s, white. The Junior senator from Wisconsin. Loud, reckless, unmannered, unmarried, and very, very effective.

[WILLIAM LEWIS JR.] Male, mid 30s, white. Senator Chase’s executive assistant and her right hand. Thin and handsome, bright and educated, impeccably dressed. He knows the ins and outs of Washington.

[JEAN KERR] Female, early 20s, white. A young acolyte of McCarthy’s. Bright and educated and fiercely loyal. She has grown accustomed to being underestimated.

THE LAUGH TRACK
