Innovative take on the modern musical; celebrates life in the greatest city in the world, as well as the power and versatility of the human voice.
Seven performers take on multiple roles, giving us a tapestry of ordinary (or not-so-ordinary) people finding their way in New York City. Their stories are told though an eclectic score that mixes pop, rock, reggae, hip-hop and even country. The show’s music is performed entirely without instruments, with every note and sound effect created by the actors’ own vocal chords.
Seeking (all roles are available (i.e. not yet offered and accepted)):
NOTE: The entire musical is a cappella. All must be exceptional musicians (MUST read music, sight-reading preferable) and versatile comic actors. All tracks (other than Boxman) play multiple parts. Seeking a multicultural cast; a true “melting pot” of NYC. Vocal ranges listed represent roughly two octaves. A cappella experience a plus.
Boxman:
Man, 20s - 40s, any ethnicity. Charismatic, quirky subway performer/comedian/poet/philosopher. The “heartbeat of the city”, his rhythm and energy drive the show. Amazing vocal percussionist/beatboxer with baritenor voice (doesn’t sing very much, but provides the percussion throughout the show).
Jane / Mezzo:
Female characters, 20s - early 30s, any ethnicity. Instantly likable girl-next-door with a sense of humor. Funny but vulnerable. Actress plays a few other comic characters as well. Must be a good belter with a seamless upper mix. Range: F# to G. Solos are in contemporary pop style.
Soprano:
Female characters, 20s, any ethnicity. Seeking versatile comic actress, able to play multiple parts/ages including Ali, a single-in-the-city girl dealing with lost love. Ability to belt/mix, but also sing straight-tone in upper register. Range: A to A#. Solos are in contemporary pop and folk styles.
Alto:
Female characters, 30s - early 40s, any ethnicity. Seeking versatile comic actress able to play multiple parts/ages including Jane’s Temp Boss (a strong, 40-something Gospel-singing executive). Solid low notes required; high belt a plus. Range: F to F. Solos are in soul and R&B styles.
Tenor:
Male characters, 20s - early 30s, any ethnicity. Seeking versatile comic actor able to play multiple parts/ages including Trent, a Southern gay man whose mom won’t let him out of the closet. Actor must be able to play over-the-top comedy as well as honest vulnerability. Range: A to A. Solos are in country and contemporary pop styles.
Baritone:
Male characters, 20s - early 30s, any ethnicity. Seeking versatile comic actor, able to play multiple parts/ages including Nate, an ex-banker trying to find himself; Jane’s romantic interest. Actor must be able to cover bass lines in addition to harmonies. Range: F to F#. Solos are in rock and contemporary pop styles.
Bass:
Male characters, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. Seeking versatile comic actor, able to play multiple parts/ages including Chris, a sports-loving, beer-drinking guy’s guy. Actor must have a big, resonant bass sound. Range: D to E. Vocal percussion skill a plus. Solos are in rock, soul and rap styles.
