Breakdown

UNTITLED MUSICAL

SEEKING:

CHARACTER 1 (ROLE IS CAST) (20s/30s) — Focused, driven, and cautious. A gifted writer and actor who believes greatness can be achieved if every detail is planned perfectly. Her perfectionism, and the limitations placed on her as a woman, have convinced her that success will only happen if she does it all by herself.

CHARACTER 2 (ROLE IS CAST) (20s/30s) — A man who survives on charm, impulse, and absolutely no preparation. He’s a brilliant actor because he is always in the moment, mostly because he never learned the lines. Terrified of death and accustomed to danger, he lies, cheats, steals, and dazzles his way through life, fully present because some fresh disaster is probably seconds away.

CHARACTER 3 (OFFER OUT) (40s+) — A cartoon man-child who swings from fury to euphoria with no warning and even less reason. A spoiled child on crack with a crown. There is no ceiling, no floor, and very little adult supervision. Though he falls in love with a man, he is essentially asexual; he pretends to understand sex because he thinks kings are supposed to, but he has absolutely no idea what it is or how it works.

CHARACTER 4 (50s+) — A brilliant strategist whose ability to think three moves ahead has convinced everyone she must be a witch. She also might actually be a witch. Dry, precise, and possibly the only person in the kingdom trying to keep the peasants from being marched into pointless wars for the benefit of the ruling class. Of course, deep down, she wouldn’t mind a little power herself.

CHARACTER 5 (OFFER OUT) (40s+) — The wealthiest man in the kingdom and the King’s right-hand. A ruthless power broker who uses blackmail, war, and humiliation with equal enthusiasm. He is the architect behind the kingdom’s endless conquests, each one earning him more land, more resources, and more money. And like many men with too much power, he has a deeply inconvenient love of being belittled.

CHARACTER 6 (20s/30s) — A socialite who understands that in this kingdom, a woman’s power comes through beauty, status, and proximity to men who think they’re in charge. She uses her looks, sexuality, and social instincts to wield real influence. She’s the King’s “lady friend,” though since he doesn’t understand sex, she’s mostly his glamorous gossip companion. She’s not dumb, she just has a very specific kind of intelligence. In modern terms: she’s a Kardashian with better survival instincts.

CHARACTER 7 (any age) — A terrifying knight and the King’s loyal bodyman. He appears to be all menace, muscle, and unquestioning obedience. Secretly, he is a die-hard theatre fan with impeccable taste. NOTE: Character is portrayed in male-drag.

CHARACTER 8 (50s+) — The exhausted man in charge of the kingdom’s theatre festival. He may have loved theatre once, but years of being forced by the King to keep the festival alive have worn him down to a haunted little nub. Like many theatre veterans, he has been beaten within an inch of his life by the thing he loves most.

CHARACTER 9 (ROLE IS CAST) (30s) — A member of Character 1’s troupe and an actor in the truest, loudest, most exhausting sense. He is thrilled to play any role in the play — preferably all of them. Volume is his process. Attention is his oxygen.

CHARACTER 10 (30s+) — A member of Character 1’s troupe with a dry wit and a deep, abiding pessimism about absolutely everything. He will complain endlessly about the troupe, the show, the audience, the weather, and the concept of theatre itself — but he would also defend these people with his life. A walking love/hate letter to the stage.

CHARACTER 11 (20s) — The newest member of Character 1’s troupe and annoyingly enthusiastic about it. He absolutely adores theatre and cannot believe he finally has a troupe of his own. He can spin almost anything into a positive, a gift that is inspirational to strangers and unbearable to everyone who knows him.

CHARACTER 12 (any age) — A member of Character 1’s troupe and, in many ways, the heart of the show. He doesn’t speak, due to some unfortunate moments in his past, but he loves with his entire soul and supports his troupe with unwavering devotion. A living embodiment of physical comedy, he pulls from Chaplin to Jim Carrey — all heart, all body, all perfectly timed chaos. He also belts his face off in the final 4 minutes of the show.

CHARACTER 13 (ROLE IS CAST) (any age) — A deeply unserious citizen of the kingdom, obsessed with gossip and proximity to power. Can land a laugh with one line, one look, or one perfectly timed entrance. The world is larger than life, comedically heightened, and proudly camp — little nuance, lots of flair.

CHARACTER 14 (any age) — A very nosy woman of prominence, circling anyone with power. Can land a laugh with one line, one look, or one perfectly timed entrance. The world is larger than life, comedically heightened, and proudly camp — little nuance, lots of flair.

CHARACTER 15 (any age) — A worn-down woman who has dedicated her life to playing her small part in a local theatre festival. She gets no credit and often questions her choices. But some of the handsome actors are fun to spend time with when the sun goes down.
