Play takes place during the Bosnian War in 1992, and deals with the relationships between people who are the victims of war – both the soldiers and the civilians.
Set in two kitchens — one in Visegrad, the other in Sarajevo, the play follows two former band-mates who became soldiers on opposite sides of the war. When one soldier kills a women in what he thinks is an act of mercy, he soon realizes the tragic results of his action when he comes face to face with her daughter. Only his estranged Croatian friend can save the girl with honey-brown eyes, and redeem his old friend.
Seeking (all roles are available (i.e. not yet offered and accepted)):
Dragan:
Man, mid-late 20s. Smallish and skinny. The butt of many people’s jokes. Truly gifted musician (although the actor does not play an instrument in the play). Dragan acts tougher than he is. Lacks sexual confidence. He would be the kid to shoot up his school. His anger and his conscience will collide in this play.
Alma:
35-39. Brown hair, brown eyes. Skinny. Any beauty referred to in the play is no longer recognizable. A mother. A smoker. Owned a bakery with her husband, who was thrown off a bridge. Not volatile, but smart and tough. A good mother and a strong person. Dry and bold; not a woman in peril. Would take any amount of torture or violence to protect her daughter: lie, be raped and cause trouble for herself. Capable of great stillness.
Branko / Milenko:
Male, 30-45. Branko: A day of raping and pillaging becomes a party to him. Can walk into a room where a woman was shot, watch TV, laugh and joke. Menacing and physically able – could be an athlete or some hairy bear of a guy or he could be more like a skinhead. More mentally off, a powder-keg. Or he could be just another soldier who has cracked, and is therefore scary. Think of someone who can give us the creeps in some way. Milenko:Not too bright, not too trustworthy. Gold chain and a track suit. He’s the eyes and ears of Serbian sniper alley.
Denis:
Man, 28-33. Tall (must reach over the top of the fridge). Alma’s brother. Soulful, gifted musician (although the actor does not play an instrument in the play). Denis chose family life and folk music over rock stardom. In this play he is a ghost of a man. He has lost everything, and has kind of evaporated rather than get angry about it. He died the day his son died. He is a sensitive man who was a hands-on father. Soft-spoken, gentle. The loss of his son and wife is what drives him to wander.
Jovanka:
Woman, 65+. Small (short) and thin. Salt of the earth. Not a big eater. Drinks, smokes, shuffles when she walks. World-weary, but a true survivor. Hides her fear and loneliness under a tough, comic exterior. Has been very lonely, with no music and no family. Has lived through WWII and Tito, and now this. Soothes us with her ability to laugh in hard times. She is not involved in this war, except to find a way to cut a deal and survive. Actress should have good comic timing and be able to stand on a chair and lift her arms in the air.
Zlata:
Girl, age 12 (must look 12; flat-chested; a girl, not a teen; a child-actor is sought, but the Theatre is also open to casting an actress 18+ who truly looks 12. Theatre states, “It is very important to the play that the audience buys that Zlata is very young”). Brown hair, brown eyes. Alma’s daughter. A bright kid who, in better times, loves to act out parts on television. An old soul. Modern-day Anne Frank. Like her mother, she will stand strong in the face of death, yet her face and physical stature always reminds us of her innocence. Seeking an actress with an inner maturity; one who is comfortable with simplicity on stage and/or revealing true vulnerability.
