Casting Directors’ notes: “THIS SHOW WAS CREATED FOR, AND WE ARE SEEKING, A MULTICULTURAL COMPANY. IN SOME INSTANCES ROLES WERE CREATED FOR ACTORS OF A SPECIFIC ETHNICITY. IN THESE CASES IT IS NOTED IN THE CHARACTER DESCRIPTION.
“Please note that, as with the original production, some nudity will be a part of these performances. However, nudity is voluntary and not a requirement for all cast members.
“The TRIBE should be composed of unique, high energy young singers with great rock/pop voices who march to their own drummer. They should represent as many different physical types as possible and sing like mad. This may be stating the obvious but we are particularly interested in performers with long, wild or freaky hair!”
Sheila:
20s. Wild and dynamic activist, with the political t-shirts and buttons to prove it. Second-semester student at NYU. Passionately involved in things, causes and people. Hung up on Berger. Low F, belt to C.
Berger:
Man, mid - late 20s to very early 30s. Sexy as all get out. Bright, funny, loud, wild and playful, but serious underneath. TOTALLY Charismatic and entertaining, he loves to make people laugh. The male leader of the tribe. Everybody is hung up on him. Role for a performer with great musical, comic and dramatic skills. And a GREAT voice. Rock tenor to A/Bb.
Claude:
Man, mid - late 20s to very early 30s. Berger's best friend. Tremendous energy and charisma. He is gentle, the embodiment of the flower-power ethos. A harmonious, ordered, balanced character, artistic, blissed-out, kind and funny. Reads all the newspapers, and is concerned about the war and the state of the human condition. Tolerant and open; he loves everyone in the Tribe, and provides them with an emotional center. Hung up on Sheila. Role for an actor with great musical, comic and dramatic skills. And a GREAT voice. Rock tenor to F#.
Woof:
Man, 20s. The more youthful-looking, the better. Sexy, good-looking, masculine, but with an androgynous quality. A free-love nature-freak granola boy. Very much in his own world; a bit of a space cadet. Baritone/tenor to G.
Hud:
African American man, 20s. Has an energetic personality. Both intellectual and street-hip. Scans the “New York Times” and the “East Village Other”. At times, he is like a wise overseer. Baritone/tenor to F#.
Jeanie:
20s. Wears long hippie dresses, and is the earth-mother of the group -- both figuratively and literally, as she is pregnant. Dry sense of humor; hippie freak granola woman. Obsessed with Claude. Alto, low G.
Dionne:
African American, mid - late 20s to very early 30s. Warm and compassionate. A strong presence, with a strong sense of justice and irony. Just plain obsessed. KILLER R&B voice with gospel overtones to open the show with “Aquarius”, as well as featured solo material throughout the show. Belt to D.
Crissy:
Late teens - early 20s (reads as young as possible). Youngest tribe member. Pretty, innocent and vulnerable. Loves the idea of the Tribe, her new chosen family. Belt/mix to C#.
