Equity actors for roles in Greenbrier Valley Theatre's 2023 (see breakdown). We encourage actors of all ethnicities, gender identities, ages, and performers with disabilities to submit.

BREAKDOWN

Equity encourages everyone participating in the auditions to wear a two-ply cloth face mask, surgical
mask, singer’s mask or respirator (N95, KN95 or KF94). Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas
are not recommended. Singer’s masks can be found at www.broadwayreliefproject.com/singersmask.
Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the
extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

Holding/Audition room information:

The audition room (Studio B) can accommodate no more than 28 individuals at a time.
The holding room can accommodate no more than 40 individuals at a time.

Alabama Story, By Kenneth Jones

Seeking:

Garth Williams and others (50ish or older, male identifying) a well-known white writer and
illustrator from the East Coast. Also assumes the roles of aged, sickly Alabama State Representative
Bobby Crone, sincere Montgomery newspaper reporter Herschel Webb, fiery segregationist columnist
Henry Branch, a folky Radio Announcer, and two silent white passersby.
Lily Whitfield (32, female identifying) a white woman from a small-town Alabama privilege.
Genteel Alabama accent. Politically unversed, she is the product of (and enjoys the benefits of) a
racist system and has not questioned it.
Joshua Moore (32, male identifying) upwardly mobile middle class African American man who
left Alabama years ago, settling in the north after serving in the Army. Purposely subtle and
suppressed Alabama Accent, which becomes more pronounced when agitated.
Senator W. Higgins (50ish or more, male identifying) a white Alabama State Senator.
Pronounced Alabama accent.
Emily Wheelock Reed (50ish or more, female identifying) a white librarian, the State Librarian
of Alabama, born in North Carolina and raised in Indiana. No Southern accent.
Thomas Franklin (28, male identifying) a white reference librarian, Emily's assistant.
Pronounced Alabama accent.

has a great deal of compassion for the music and the group. Romantic crooner and spiritual

Sparky (Male Identifying, age 20-35) The clown of the group, who is shown to have a heart.
Very sharp and loves singing his tailor-made solos. Wears a retainer and has a slight speech

Jinx (Male Identifying, age 20-35) The shy one. He lives his life terrified and doesn't always remember
what song comes next. Sparky's step-brother, he occasionally gets a nosebleed when he sings above

Smudge (Male Identifying, age 20-35) The worrier. He worries about the props, the running order,
and always assumes the audience won't like him. Has a chronic nervous stomach and is oddly
