Seeking:

Claire:

AVAILABLE ROLE. 50s. Casually cruel, domineering, self-involved stage actress of some note. Widowed. Bernard’s sister. Mother to Wally and Carolyn (unseen). Preparing to play Arkadina in “The Seagull”, and requests that the director, Tom, not consider her friend Charlotte for the role of Paulina. She hides her recent cancer diagnosis from her friends and family.

Wally:

AVAILABLE ROLE. 20s - early 30s. Claire’s son. Young writer/director working unhappily in television. The inertia he feels in his career is really a symptom of his grief over the recent death of his lover, Mark. Sweet, vulnerable, smart. Gifted and original artist.

The following roles are cast (i.e. offers accepted). Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary.

Passalus:

CAST. 50s. Once a minor player in the theater of ancient Athens, he has languished in Hell for two millennia. Now a shape-shifting demon returned to Earth by God to ease the pain of the unseen Carolyn. Numbed by his years of torment, he has asked God to grant him utter annihilation in return for his service. He assumes the character of Mrs. Constance Simmons, a cultured and compassionate British matron. Despite himself, he falls in love with Bernard.

Charlotte:

CAST. 50s. Long-struggling actress whose desperation, wild insecurity and worship of her long-time friend, Claire, undermine her considerable talent. Angling for a role in “The Seagull”. Kind and compassionate, all she requires to do better in art and life is a bit of gentle and genuine encouragement. A little in love with Bernard. Doting, aunt-like figure to Wally.

Bernard:

CAST. 50s. Melancholic playwright and teacher. Romantic with a deep love and intimate knowledge of the natural world. Speaks with earnest passion about the things he loves. Never quite recovered from the death (of AIDS) of his lover, Patrick. Despite himself, he falls in love with Passalus.

Malcolm / God:

CAST. Malcolm: 50s. Respected set designer and Tom’s longtime partner; has quietly suffered Tom’s numerous infidelities for decades. Unhappy with his appearance, but a photographer and great admirer of beauty elsewhere in the world. God: Omniscient and omnipotent. Sends Passalus back to Earth.

Tom:

CAST. 50s. Distinguished theatrical director. Long-time partner to Malcolm, but a compulsive philanderer who can’t help but enjoy the power he holds over young and eager chorus boys. Secretly Wally’s biological father, he lives somewhat in the shadow of Claire’s late husband, Robert, also a respected director.

Theatre’s statement: “Playwrights Horizons does not believe in discrimination based on color, race, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, disabilities, gender, or otherwise. All performers, including those of color, seniors, women, and performers with disabilities, are encouraged to audition and will be given full consideration.”
