BREAKDOWN

GIANT

The play is set in 1983 at Dahl’s family home in Buckinghamshire, England.

SEEKING:

ROALD DAHL – Late 60s. World renowned English author of children’s books, screenplays and short stories. A towering figure in every sense: physically tall, charismatic, brilliant, witty, and often infuriating author who is under intense scrutiny. Dahl is impulsive, irritable, manipulative, yet capable of tenderness.

TOM MASCHLER – Late 40s-Early 50s. Dahl’s British publisher and friend, smart, easy, good at avoiding conflict. Maschler tends to downplay his Jewish identity, but it’s essential to who he is.

FELICITY “LICCY” CROSLAND – Mid 40s. Dahl’s long-time partner and fiancée, recently moved into his home. An English interior designer, very good at her job, sophisticated, educated, elegant, she comes from privilege and has a certain briskness born of confidence. She’s supportive, pragmatic, and she strives to maintain the calm in a chaotic environment.

JESSIE STONE – Mid 30s. A Jewish-American sales director of a publishing company, early in her career, who has been sent to meet Dahl by his U.S. publisher. In awe of Dahl’s talent and accomplishments. Smart, perceptive and articulate and able to stand up for her beliefs.

HALLIE – 20s. The Dahl household’s New Zealand-born cook. Down to earth, warm, frank and loyal. She’s smart and honest, with a sense of humor.

WALLY SAUNDERS – Mid 60s - Early 70s. English (from Norfolk). Caretaker and groundskeeper of Dahl and Liccy’s home. A very tall man, practical, plainspoken and a bit gruff. A veteran of WWI, he and Dahl have bonded over their wartime experiences.
