BILLIE DAWN
FEMALE, 35-45; A totally charming, utterly honest, poorly educated and whip-smart ex-chorus girl, Billie Dawn is lacking in social graces, but chock full of charisma. Her natural honesty and desire to improve her lot in life, however, soon cause her to experience a wonderful transformation. Wildly attractive and breathtakingly refreshing. She is tough, funny and kind.

HARRY BROCK
MALE, 50s; Big, vulgar and egotistical. The self-made man Harry Brock has come to Washington full of fraudulent schemes. Loud and verbally and physically abusive of those around him. Not a college man, not patient, expects things to happen as soon as he orders them. He really loves Billie, in his way, which is more as a possession. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

PAUL VERRALL
MALE, 30s-50s; Personable, idealistic, inquisitive, and wildly intelligent and insightful. He is a reporter for The New Republic, and has a journalists innate curiosity and nose for the truth. He knows there’s more to Harry than meets the ears. He has no problem standing up for what he believes in, among which is included democracy and the rights of the voting public.

ED DEVERY
MALE, 50-60; a once-promising young lawyer who lost sight of the promise, he is now an alcoholic with one client, Harry. Bitter, smart, ironic, sad and mostly broken.

SENATOR NORVAL HEDGES
MALE, 45-60; a member of the Senate for some time now, he has never made a name for himself there, and instead has become reliant on Harry Brock’s world to support his lifestyle. He might have been a good man, once. He might have been bright. Hard to tell, now.

EDDIE BROCK
MALE, 30’s; Harry’s cousin and right-hand yes-man and toady. He does everything for Harry, from bartending to tipping the bell boy to packing bags and anything unpleasant. He knows his limits and has a healthy respect for them. He maybe understands what’s really going on...

MRS. HEDGES/HELEN/MANICURIST
FEMALE, 45-60; Mrs. Hedges: a socially graceful woman who is the perfect Congressional helpmeet; poised, well-dressed, charming and completely incurious about her husband’s actual work. Helen: the Hotel Maid who takes no nonsense and is Billie’s ally.

THE ASSISTANT MANAGER, BELLHOPS, BARBER, BOOTBLACK, WAITER
THREE MALES, 25-40

JUROR 3
A very strong, very forceful, extremely opinionated man with a sadistic streak. He is a humorless man who is intolerant of opinions other than his own and accustomed to forcing his wishes and views upon others. Caucasian

JUROR 4
Seems to be a man of wealth and position. He is a practiced speaker who presents himself well at all times. He seems to feel a little bit above the rest of the jurors. His only concern is with the facts in this case, and he is appalled at the behavior of the others. Caucasian

JUROR 5

JUROR 6
An honest but dull-witted man who comes upon his decisions slowly and carefully. A man who finds it difficult to create positive opinions, but who must listen to and digest and accept those opinions offered by others which appeal to him most. African-American

JUROR 7
A loud, flashy-handed salesman type who has more important things to do than to sit on a jury. He is quick to show temper, quick to form opinions on things about which he knows nothing, is a bully and, of course, a coward. Caucasian

JUROR 8

JUROR 11
A refugee who has come to this country in 1941. A man who speaks with an accent and who is ashamed humble, almost subservient to the people around him, but who will honestly seek justice because he has suffered through so much injustice. African-American

JUROR 12
A slick, bright advertising man who thinks of human beings in terms of percentages graphs, and polls and has no real understanding of people. He is a superficial snob, but trying to be a good fellow. Caucasian
