PREPARATION

Please be warmed up and ready to dance at the start of the call. If asked, be prepared to sing a short selection of your choice in a similar style to the show. Please bring sheet music in the correct key. As an alternative to singing a song of choice, you may sing an excerpt from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Accompanist provided. Please wear appropriate dance attire. Character/jazz shoes and knee pads are recommended. Please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

Synopsis

Experience Fiddler on the Roof in a new way – in Yiddish, the language of Tevye and his family! The rich Yiddish translation (with English and Russian supertitles) adds new depth and dimension to the most well-known Jewish musical in the world. Don’t miss the beloved story of a community and its struggle to balance traditions and desires in a changing world. The little town of Anatevka will bustle with the sounds of mame-loshn.

All roles are open to performers of all ethnicities. Performers with strong vocal skills, dance training and a working acquaintance with Yiddish or a great ear for language are encouraged to audition. Fiddler On The Roof In Yiddish is performed entirely in Yiddish (with English and Russian supertitles).

SEEKING:

The Constable (Der Gradavoy) - Russian military official stationed near Anatevka who knows the villagers well, however he has superficial relationships with the villagers. Knowledge of Russian a plus. Male identifying. Age: 35 to 55. Vocal Range: Baritone. Strong mover.

Fyedka (Fyedke) - A strong, young Russian soldier who sees past his military obligations and falls in love with Chava. He challenges Tevye's imposed silence. Knowledge of Russian a plus. Male identifying. Age: 20 to 25. Vocal Range: Tenor. Strong dancer.

Grandma Tzeitel (Bobe-Tsaytl) - Golde's deceased grandmother, who endorses the marriage between Tzeitel and Motel. Female identifying. Age: 35-50. Vocal range top: D5/ Vocal range bottom: C#4.

Fruma-Sarah (Frume-Sore) - Lazar Wolf's deceased first wife. She becomes enraged when her husband plans to wed Tzeitel. Female identifying. Age: 35 to 45. Vocal range top: Eb5/Vocal range bottom: C4.

Ensemble: Villagers and Russian Peasant men (including the roles of Sasha, Fyedka’s friend and a menacing Russian, Mendel, the Rabbi’s son, and Yussel, the town hatter).

Singers and Dancers: The cast requires excellent singers who are versatile actors with good movement skills, and dancers or strong movers to play characters ages 20’s – 60’s and to fill principal understudy assignments.
