Equity actors for roles in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (see

). All roles will be understudied.

PREPARATION


3 minutes total – strict time limit 1 (2 min) monologue, preferable from a published play. Additionally, 16 bars of music – please sing 16 bars from traditional musical theater repertoire (Golden Age) that shows your voice and range. The score is legit. Please bring sheet music in the proper key and have your rep book available in case asked for an additional selection. As an alternative to singing a song of choice, you may sing an excerpt from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Show off voice and range. Actors wishing to be considered for the role of “The Fiddler” are encouraged to play the violin for this audition. Please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

Synopsis: Experience Fiddler on the Roof in a new way – in Yiddish, the language of Tevye and his family! The rich Yiddish translation (with English supertitles) adds new depth and dimension to the most well-known Jewish musical in the world. Don’t miss the beloved story of a community and its struggle to balance traditions and desires in a changing world. The little town of Anatevka will bustle with the sounds of mame-loshn.

Performers with strong vocal skills, dance training and a working acquaintance with Yiddish or a great ear for language are encouraged to audition. Fidler Afn Dakh (Fiddler On The Roof) is performed entirely in Yiddish (with English supertitles).

SEEKING:

Tevye (CAST) – The likeable, hard-working, pious dairyman who always tries to see the positive side of life. He is a proud patriarch and father of five daughters, closely raised according to the old scriptures. Male identifying. Age: 45 to 60. Vocal range top: F4, Vocal range bottom: Ab2.

Golde - Tevye's strong-willed wife who wishes for her daughters to have good husbands and live easier than she and Tevye. Female identifying. Age: 40 to 50. Vocal range top: Eb5, Vocal range bottom: A3.

Tzeitel (Tsaytl) - Tevye's eldest daughter, who is madly in love with Motel. She is loyal to her family but typically challenges the town's tradition. Female identifying. Age: 18 to 25. Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: B3.

Hodel (Hodl) - Tevye's second eldest daughter, who becomes involved with Perchik. She eventually leaves Anatevka to join Perchik in Siberia. Female identifying. Comfortable with dancing. Age: 18 to 25. Vocal range top: E5, Vocal range bottom: B3.

Chava (Khave) - Tevye's middle daughter who loves to read. Falls in love and runs off with Fyedka, a Russian soldier and breaks her father’s heart. Possesses good dance ability. Female identifying. Age: 18 to 25. Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: B3. Strong dancer with training.

Shprintze (Shprintse) - Tevye's fourth eldest daughter who takes lessons at home from Perchik. Female identifying. Age: 18-22 but looks 10 - 15. Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: B3.

Bielke (Beylke) - Tevye's youngest daughter. Takes lessons at home from Perchik. Female identifying. Age: 18+ to play 8 - 12. Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: B3.

Yente (CAST) – The meddling matchmaker. She is a widow and village busybody who knows all of the town gossip. Female identifying. Age: 50 to 60. Vocal range top: F5, Vocal range bottom: F3.

Motel (Motl) Kamzoyl - The poor and meek tailor who shares a deep love with Tzeitel. Sensitive and nervous, but sincere and friendly. Male identifying. Age: 18 to 25. Vocal range top: F#4, Vocal range bottom: E3.

Perchik (Pertshik) - The outspoken student and visitor to Anatevka, who constantly challenges the traditions of the town. He eventually falls in love with Hodel. Male identifying. Age: 20 to 30. Comfortable with dancing. Vocal range top: E4, Vocal range bottom: B2.

Lazar Wolf (Leyzer Volf) - The feisty, brawny butcher and the town's wealthiest citizen who wishes to marry Tzeitel. Male identifying. Age: 40 to 60. Vocal range top: F#4, Vocal range bottom: C3.

Avram (Avrom) - Runs the local bookshop and keeps the town advised of all the news in the area. Male identifying. Age: 40 to 60. Vocal range top: Eb4, Vocal range bottom: D3. Strong mover.

Nachum/Mordcha (Nokhem/Mordkhe) – Male identifying. Plays Nachum, the town beggar. Doubles as Mordcha who runs the bar in town and is a friend of Tevye. Age: 35-60. Strong mover.

Rabbi (Der Rov) – Male identifying. Anatevka’s Jewish spiritual leader. Age: 60+.

Mendel (Mendl) – Male identifying. The Rabbi’s son. A very strong dancer. Age: 20 - 35.

The Fiddler (Der Fidler) - The Fiddler. Plays the violin very well. Freedom of movement and expression are the keys to this character. Also be able to sing well. Any gender. Age: 20 – 35.
