Playwright James Ijames reinvents Shakespeare’s masterpiece with his new drama, a delectable comic tragedy. Juicy is a queer, Southern college kid, already grappling with some serious questions of identity, when the ghost of his father shows up in their backyard, demanding that Juicy avenge his murder. It feels like a familiar story to Juicy, well-versed in Hamlet’s woes. What’s different is Juicy himself, a sensitive and self-aware young Black man trying to break the cycles of trauma and violence in service of his own liberation. From an uproarious family barbecue emerges a compelling examination of love and loss, pain and joy. Winner of the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this first-run production is a must-see.
JUICY — 20–21, Black. He’s thicc. He’s beautiful. He is lonely. He is smart. A kind of Hamlet.
TEDRA — 45–50, Black. Juicy’s mother. She is a good mother. A kind of Gertrude.
REV — 45–50, Black. Tedra’s husband. Her dead ex-husband’s brother. Pig farmer and pitmaster. Electric. A kind of Claudius. Doubles as PAP.
OPAL — 19–20, Black. One of Juicy’s only friends. She loves Ham and worries about him. A kind of Ophelia.
LARRY — 21–23, Black. A boy who is attracted to Juicy. A marine. Trying to heal from PTSD. Has a secret. Awkward. A kind of Laertes.
RABBY — 40–45, Black. Larry and Opal’s mother. Tedra’s friend. Semi-churchy but honestly she just wants to drink and praise the Lord. A kind of Polonius.
PAP — 45ish, Black. Ghost of Juicy’s father. Was in prison for killing someone because their breath stank, til he got shanked on the way to dinner. A kind of Hamlet's father. Doubles as REV.
TIO — 20–40, Black or Afro-Latinx. Clever. Juicy’s cousin. Oldest friend. A kind of Horatio.
