PREPARATION
The musical styles span contemporary Broadway to Neil Diamond, David Bowie glam-rock, to edgy musical theatre. Please prepare either one 90 second cut or two 45 second cuts that reflect the styles mentioned. Accompanist provided. Please bring sheet music in correct key and 2 copies of picture/resume

The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center presents staged readings of three new musicals during the National Music Theater Conference - each musical is in residence for two week between June 19 - July 14, 2018.

THE FAMILY RESEMBLANCE

Character Breakdown: 5W, 2M
AKOSUA (uh-KOH- swee-yah), mixed race woman, mid 30s. Buttoned-up, professional, the one who gets things done. A director of communications for a global firm. Everyone calls her Akos (uh-KOHS).
BETSY, white woman, Californian, 60s. Cheerful, scattered, creative. A quilter and former social worker.
KOFI, black man, Ghanaian, 60s. The patriarch. A brilliant chemistry professor with a playful sense of humor. Sees himself as the protector of his family but carries his own deep wounds.
SYLVIE, mixed race woman, late 20s/early 30s. Passionate believer in beauty and justice. A graduate student and art teacher. Similar temperament to her mother, with whom she does not get along.
MARCUS, white man, late 20s/early 30s. Feels he has a lot to prove. The director of a west Philadelphia youth center. Doubles as SØRENSEN, the spirit of Betsy’s father, a rakish, Scandinavian-American navy man.
VALENTINA, a spirit, appears as a black woman, Ghanaian. Regal, warm, and very practical. Could be played by an actress anywhere between 30s to 80s.
MINA, mid 30s, high school friend of Akos. Adopted as a child, now a professional singer. Doubles as GLADYS, black woman, Ghanaian, Valentina’s best friend, appears as a spirit and young woman.

DAWN O’KEEFE –FEMALE. 16. A sanctified, evangelical Christian girl. Leader of a chastity group called Promise Keeper Girls.
PROMISE KEEPER GIRLS –FEMALE. 16ish but also project older. An ensemble of at least six (6) young women who are both literal members of Dawn’s chastity group and the theatrical manifestation of Dawn’s subconscious.
BRAD O’KEEFE –MALE. 17. Dawn’s step-brother. Rebellious and edgy.
TOBEY AKIN –MALE. 16. Dawn’s religiously convicted boyfriend. Doubles as other incidental male characters as necessary.
RYAN –MALE. 16. A young gay man who is working with the Promise Keeper Girls to help reverse his same sex attraction.
BILL O’KEEFE –MALE. Late 40s –Dawn’s pious step-father. Brad’s biological father. Doubled by the actor portraying Dr. Godfrey.
DR. GODFREY –MALE. 40ish. A local gynecologist Dawn goes to for help once she discovers her vagina dentata. Doubled by the actor portraying Bill.

Characters in the straight play:
Eddie - M, early 20s. Intense social anxiety. Leaves his house once a month or so, never by choice. A strange, vivid imagination. Volcanic emotions and no way to release them.
Louise - F, 40s. Eddie’s (adoptive) mom. Rock music fan and receptionist at a dentist’s office. Desperately worried about Eddie.
Postwoman - F, 60s. The postwoman for these zip codes for 33 years. She’s a talker.
Jessie - F, 20s. Eddie’s best/only friend. Grew up next door. Just quit the Peace Corps.
John - M, 40s/50s. Louise’s boyfriend. An accountant. Nervous, shy, and crazy for Louise.
Characters in the rock opera:
Eddie the Marvelous (played by actor playing Eddie) - Intergalactic superhero. Superpower: controls time, speeding it up or slowing it down at his whim.
Jessie the Bold (played by Jessie) - Eddie the Marvelous’ sidekick. Superpower: telepathy.
Commander (played by Louise) - Eddie the Marvelous’ supervisor. No-nonsense.
The Diamond (played by John) Supervillain. Plans to invade Earth and destroy it.
Postwoman (played by Postwoman) - Herself, but with more of an Obi-Wan flavor
