EFFA LOVES BASEBALL

SEEKING:

  • EFFA MANLEY: 40s, an African-American woman who can pass for a white woman. Dynamic. Funny. Demanding. Generous. Competitive. Loves everything about baseball. Great at business. Always wears high heels, loves pearls, flowery dresses, minks, and dazzling hats.
  • ABE MANLEY: 50s, African-American man. Effa's husband and co-owner of the Newark Eagles; colorful too. Earned his money in numbers. Loves baseball. Friendly with the players.
  • LARRY DOBY: early 20s African-American man. South Carolina native. Earnest college student who becomes a baseball star. He dreams of playing in Major League Baseball, despite segregation.
  • BIZ MACKEY: late 30s African-American man. Texan. Team manager. Former (and sometimes current) player. Strong opinions on the game.
  • LIEUTENANT GILBERT/BRANCH RICKEY/BILL VEECK: late 30s/early 40s white man.
  • MARION MOTLEY: mid 20s African-American man, from Ohio. Soldier. Football player. Doubles as ANNOUNCER, CONCESSION GUY 1 & 2, DJ, MALE VOICE, NEWS ANNOUNCER, RADIO ANNOUNCER, REPORTER.

The Roles of LIEUTENANT GILBERT/BRANCH RICKEY/BILL VEECK and MARION MOTLEY will be understudied.
