BREAKDOWN
Franklin, a young black artist, finds himself seduced by Andre, a wealthy ‘daddy’ - that is, patron. What is it Franklin finds alluring about this man twice his age? His midcentury mansion? His Basquiats? The way he looks in a speedo? His enormous... pool? Though a tad surreal, their erotic link deepens from a naughty fetish to an irresistible love. But when Franklin’s Christian mother decides that her son is in peril, she enters into a deeply moving battle of wills with Andre over the soul of their baby boy.

MAX
Mid 20s. White. Franklin’s best friend. An actor who has been cast as a lead in three network pilots that weren’t picked up. Lots of fun, but can be judgmental about everyone but himself. Effortlessly hip and malleable, he finds himself with a deep-seeded resistance to Franklin and Andre’s relationship, which doesn’t prevent him from partaking in the many perks Andre offers. Looks and feels natural chilling poolside.
BELLAMY
Mid 20s. A Non-Black, Woman of Color. Also close to Franklin and Max. She’s quite happy with her own directionlessness. Wrapped up in the social (and social media) whirl, her charm is that she’s joyous in consumption and unashamed at seeming vapid. She’s readily happy in Franklin’s comfort and success, and ready to like just about anyone. She has 9.3k instagram followers and counting.
ZORA
40-60s. Black. Franklin’s mother, who raised her only child mostly on her own. A Virginian and a soldier for Christ. Someone who sees the world as it is and not how she wishes it were. She’s intensely protective of her son and ready to fight for him with her formidable cunning, and with a cutting sense of humor. The epitome of poise under pressure, but not afraid to speak her mind.
GOSPEL CHOIR
Any Age. Black. Female. Frankin’s forgotten soul and Zora’s shadow, a yearning heart boldly wrestling with faith and pain. Strong, powerful singer with a deep facility for gospel. Preferably to be cast with a single performer.

FRANKLIN
Mid 20s, Black. An emerging sculpture artist. Has the slightest hint of a southern accent, which becomes subtly more pronounced as the play progresses. Ambitious, confident in his taste and free with his opinions, but less assured in relationships. As attracted to Andre as he is scared of his mother. [ROLE CAST]
ANDRE
50-60s. White. One of those possibly ethnic Europeans with the unmistakable accent of the incredibly wealthy. A collector who buys art with an explicit worth. Gracious and sincere. Sensual, unabashed in his desires and accustomed to dominating. Truly smitten with Franklin. [ROLE CAST]
ALESSIA
Any Age. A gallerist who is sharp and direct. She has inherited the role of running the gallery from her father, but has a real passion for it and knows the art world inside and out, including Andre’s position in it. A true believer in Franklin’s potential. [ROLE CAST]
