This ambitious odyssey unfolds in the space between two worlds, as Cassis travels to Japan to find her dead brother’s soul and put it to rest. The play borrows from Eastern and Western myths and storytelling traditions to explore love, loss and life. Its epic Hell-and-back journey is told through puppetry, music, poetry and sharp dialogue.
Seeking:
Cassis:
AVAILABLE ROLE. Japanese American woman, mid – late 20s. Brash, a little bit of a cowboy. Stubborn. Painfully aware that she does not fit in anywhere. Can be charming when she wants to be. Used to getting what she wants.
Ishida:
AVAILABLE ROLE. Japanese man, mid - late 20s. Strong, stoic, pragmatic. Deeply loyal. Always aware of the rules, but often breaks them. He’s used to feeling like an outsider.
The Crane:
AVAILABLE ROLE. Japanese female, 30s – 70. Ageless/timeless aura. An old soul, ravaged by deep grief and guilt. When she remembers the past, she becomes beautiful and young again. Her joy is luminous, and her sadness is crushing. She is both woman and bird.
The Drowned Man:
AVAILABLE ROLE. Japanese, 30 – 70. Ageless/timeless aura. A mercurial ghost, prone to sudden rages and fits of inconsolable sadness. When he remembers who he was, he is a shy and deeply decent man.
The following roles are cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary.
Junpei / Naoko:
CAST. Japanese American man, 18 - early 20s. Playful, hopeful, headstrong. A great sadness beneath the surface. It’s hard not to love him. He has always felt more at home in Japan than his sister.
Theo:
CAST. Caucasian American man, 30s. Simultaneously seedy and charming. A womanizer. A musician. Started out having an adventure, and got deeply lost along the way. People like him, but they don’t trust him.
Skell:
CAST. Japanese female, 30s – 60s. Ageless/timeless aura. The Librarian of the Underworld. Organized, passionately pragmatic, strict. Underneath this, fueled by a deep and lonely curiosity.
