Setting: Contemporary New York City.
Seeking (all roles are available):
Jay Bennett:
African American, early 20s. Young “New York Times” reporter. Hyper-intelligent, ambitious and slick. Impatient for success and paranoid about failure. A master manipulator, and self-destructive.
Jacob Sherman:
Jewish, 20s. Young “Times” reporter. Smart, somewhat nerdy; tries to be funny. He’s good friends with Jay, but isn’t willing to play the game the way Jay does. Has aspirations to write a novel.
Monica Soria:
Mexican American, 20s. From Texas. Young “Times” reporter who enjoys gossip. Close with both Jay and Jacob. Not as cutthroat as either of them.
Hal Martin:
50s. Executive editor. Southern gentleman, both charming and arrogant. Likes to make big speeches, and is ruthless in his bottom-line management style.
Gerald Haynes:
African American, 50s. Editor. Sturdy, intimidating and authoritative, with a disarming smile that is seldom seen. Has fought an uphill battle to get where he is.
Junior:
Jewish man, late 40s. Publisher, and heir to the paper. Loves to play the benevolent patriarch-type role, guiding the young ones. Sometimes tries too hard.
Frank King:
Caucasian, 60s. Editor. A “Times” man for his whole career, he is old-school and meticulous. Hails from the days of the “work hard/play hard” attitude at the paper, and doesn’t know any other life. Has his reporters’ backs.
Ben:
Caucasian, 50s. Editor. In constant competition with Gerald. Very territorial, with high expectations; runs a tight ship. Has no patience for sloppiness, and is not impressed with Jay.
