Circle Mirror Transformation is the hilarious, moving new comedy about the most unlikely of stories. Five citizens of a rural town begin a community acting class, each with their own expectations, but soon learn more about each other and themselves than they bargained for. Hailed as one of the most insightful and original new works of the year, the Rep is proud to present the Midwest premiere of a play that explores the creativity and ability to transform that which lies within each of us.

Seeking 4 brilliant comedic actors with tremendous sincerity, to form a tight knit ensemble.

Marty:

(55 year old woman) interested in the arts, with a focus on theatre and performance, and has managed to pull together the first ever Adult Theatre Acting class at the local community center in Shirley, Vermont. She believes in nontraditional healing. She has an energy about her that keeps her moving (or so it seems) in that way, perhaps, that an acting professor in college behaves: passion in and through her professorship. She’s a good teacher, but perhaps is has been a while since she’s led a class of adults. There’s a light and kindness about her, though she doesn’t hesitate to bark at someone if it’s needed. She genuinely cares. Vibrant and talks with her entire body, joyous and earthy. Very honest and passionate.

Schultz:

(48 year old) He is a divorcee who is trying to put the pieces of his life together. He’s a sweet but incredibly sensitive man whose broken heart weighs heavily on him. However, this class offers him a chance to rediscover his self-respect. Over the course of the class he falls in love and finds heartbreak once more with Theresa, another student in the class.

Theresa:

(35 year old) A former actress who has just recently left a boyfriend who was not good for her after a long relationship. Similarly, she – like Shultz – is looking to put herself back together again. She has a light about her. There’s a “protectiveness” about her since the breakup which might make her situation with Schultz appear selfish. She’s a deeply good person. One gets the feeling that people fall in love with her all the time but she’s not one to recognize that. She doesn’t have an ego. Just a good person who’s made some bad choices.

Lauren:

(must read 16 but should be at least 18) A high school girl who is taking this class in order to become a better actress and better prepare for an upcoming audition for West Side Story. However, she is almost cripplingly uncomfortable with this class. There’s an impressive level of anxiety in her that keeps her from speaking, participating and the result is an extremely conflicted girl who comes across as very strange and quiet. She comes from a family dealing with very difficult issues and is – in a way – lost.
