Understudy for Miss Qian and Zhao:

Understudy for Bing and Minister Cai:

AVAILABLE POSITION. Track age: 40s. Both characters are Asian men. Fluent Mandarin ability required. See character descriptions below.

Note from Equity (updated 8/3/11) about the positions listed below: CHINGLISH was produced earlier in 2011 at a regional Theatre. Most positions in the Broadway production have been offered, but have not yet been accepted; they are therefore considered available. The casting-status of these offered roles may change before the EPA; check notice again for updates. As of 8/9/11, two roles (Peter and Zhao) have been cast.

Xu Yan:

OFFER OUT; ROLE STILL AVAILABLE; CHECK NOTICE AGAIN FOR CASTING-STATUS UPDATE. Asian woman, 30s. Vice Minister of Culture for the provincial Chinese capital of Guiyang. Has a curt and professional demeanor, as well as a more romantic side. Her strong sexuality never obscures her practical outlook on life. Fluent Mandarin ability required, in speaking and reading (characters or pinyin).

Minister Cai:

OFFER OUT; ROLE STILL AVAILABLE; CHECK NOTICE AGAIN FOR CASTING-STATUS UPDATE. Asian man, 40s-50s. Minister of Culture for Guiyang. Has successfully navigated his way up the Communist Party hierarchy, yet is currently torn between his genuine love for artists and the demands of the new market economy. Fluent Mandarin ability required, in speaking and reading (characters or pinyin).

Miss Qian / Prosecutor Li:

OFFER OUT; ROLE STILL AVAILABLE; CHECK NOTICE AGAIN FOR CASTING-STATUS UPDATE. Female, Asian, 30s. Qian: Chinese-English translator, earnestly trying to succeed at her job, but easily flustered. Li: Chinese. Tough, no-nonsense judicial official. Actress also covers Xu Yan. Fluent Mandarin ability required, in speaking and reading (characters or pinyin).

Bing / Judge Geming:

OFFER OUT; ROLE STILL AVAILABLE; CHECK NOTICE AGAIN FOR CASTING-STATUS UPDATE. Male, Asian, 30s-40s. Bing: Chinese-English translator, overly confident in his language skills. Reacts defensively to any criticism. Geming: Xu’s husband. Charismatic, handsome and well-spoken. Fluent Mandarin ability required, in speaking and reading (characters or pinyin).

Peter Timms:

Update, posted 8/3/11: Role is now CAST. Seeking Understudy (see above). Caucasian Australian man, 30-50. Has lived and worked in China for many years, and speaks fluent Mandarin. Very winning and charming – but underneath, a little desperate. Actor must speak and read fluent Mandarin (either in characters or pinyin form) as well as be able to speak English with a convincing Australian accent.

Zhao:

Update, posted 8/9/11: Role is now CAST. Seeking Understudy (see above). Asian woman, 20s-30. Chinese-English translator with a decided weakness for gossip and celebrity. Fluent Mandarin ability required, in speaking and reading (characters or pinyin).
