BREAKDOWN

The Clarence Brown Theatre, in partnership with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, has been awarded a generous grant from The Roy Cockrum Foundation to produce a collaborative production of Leonard Bernstein’s CANDIDE. Directed by Calvin MacLean (Producing Artistic Director, Clarence Brown Theatre) and conducted by Aram Demirjian (Music Director, Knoxville Symphony Orchestra), performances will take place August 29 – September 16, 2018 on the mainstage of the Clarence Brown Theatre at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This will be the theatre’s third collaboration with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, following sold-out runs of Amadeus in 2010, and Sweeney Todd in 2012.

IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE COMPRISE AN ETHNICALLY DIVERSE CAST.

SEEKING:

CANDIDE (Male, early 20s) Any ethnicity. Candide’s story is about having everything you once believed to be true taken from you. Certainly, he begins naïvely, and certain of his beliefs. As his certainties are challenged he falls into a broad range of emotions: despair, anger, doubt and disenchantment with the ones he holds most dear. But in this production, he is not gullible or dim – he learns, he forgives, his later wisdom is hard won. His songs are emotional, ranging from great joy to deep despair. His naivete is often funny. He tries to hold onto what “his master told him” with determination and passion. Tenor.

CUNEGONDE (Female, early 20s) Any ethnicity. Part self-involved ingénue, part shrewd survivor, Cunegonde delights in worldly things. Her love for Candide is certain, but there are many other attractive options in the world. She likes wealth and power and is not ashamed to use her charm to get them. When Candide rejects her at the end, she is bereft – both because of his rejection and also because she has not been understood. She has survived, but is left unforgiven. Lyric Coloratura.

MAXIMILLIAN (Male, 20s) Any ethnicity. Cunegonde’s blood and Candide’s adopted brother. Handsome and vital, but also vain and ridiculous. He is one of the comic engines of the story – takes on many roles to survive. Throughout, he holds his position and privilege in high esteem. And is played for a fool in and by the world. Baritone.
