BREAKDOWN

Season runs May 14- September 8, 2019

All shows rehearse in Rhode Island

LOVE AND OTHER FABLES
Director-Jay Binder, Choreographer- Kelli Barclay

Performance dates- May 29, 2019- June 16, 2019. First rehearsal May 14, 2019

Note: This brand-new romantic screwball musical comedy, set in 600 B.C., follows the early life of Aesop, the not-yet-famous slave, as he creates the “fable”, persistently woos the head strong girl of his dreams, enters into a battle of wits with the King of Egypt and changes the course of history.

It requires actors of tremendous comic skill, both in classic music theatre vaudeville style and farce. The show is a blend of classic Golden Age musical theater and contemporary comedy. The actors must have the skill to move easily between the two styles.

Principals

Males:

AESOP (mid 20s – mid 30s) He is clever, adorable, quick-witted and resourceful. He has the ability to solve any problem through the use of his charm, wit and fables. He is mischievous yet must be endearing. His one problem is that he is absolutely “all thumbs” when it comes to women. Once he falls in love with Lycaena, he is determined to win her heart at any cost. Actor must have great charm and expert comic skills. This actor must be able to carry an entire show. Tenor. (Role cast understudy only)

KING CROESUS OF LYDIA (mid to late 40s) Richest man in ancient Greece. On the surface, he is powerful, threatening and pompous. Underneath, he is a quivering mass of Jell-O. Quick to make impulsive decisions and easily manipulated not only by Delphinia but by Aesop as well. Completely selfish and spoiled. But in the end, he too learns from Aesop and his fables on how to have a shred of generosity. This part requires an actor of remarkable comic skill in the Nathan Lane tradition. The actor could be on the portly side. Tenor. (Role cast understudy only)

XANTHUS (late 40s – early 60s) While he is a great philosopher, he is vague and forgetful and absolutely under the thumb of his wife, Catastrophe. He immediately recognizes Aesop’s talents and appreciates his intelligence and adorable personality. He is a father figure to his slave, Lycaena. While he may be dotty and often confused, he has a huge heart and a deep understanding of the importance of true love. Must be a superb character comic. Character voice.

PHILOCALUS (mid 20s – mid 30s) Drop dead gorgeous with a muscular physique. A slave and a musician. Plays the lyre. Not the brightest bulb, in fact he is always slow on the uptake but certainly knows how to use his obvious physical attributes to his advantage. He is vain and self-consumed, completely unaware of his slow-wittedness. He has an intrinsic naivete that makes him endearing. Baritone.

HIERONYMOUS/SEA CAPTAIN/DEAF MAN/SINBAD/NECTANABO, KING OF EGYPT (40s) Versatile comic character actor to play Hieronymous, a harassed slave salesman, a crusty sea captain, an ancient deaf man, Sinbad, a pirate-like sea captain capable of a Scottish accent and the frightening, all powerful and all-knowing King of Egypt, Nectanabo. This requires a versatile character actor capable of real Vaudeville-style comedy and many accents and voices. Short is a plus. Baritone.

Females:

LYCAENA (mid 20s – mid 30s) Xanthus and Catastrophe’s slave. Absolutely adorable and winning. Bursting at the seams for a husband and dreams of marrying the unattainable Greek God: handsome, muscular and perfect. She is desperate for the “sharp stab of ecstasy”! When Xanthus buys Aesop for Lycaena, she takes an instant dislike to him as he is nothing like the Dream Man that she expected. Through the course of the play, she realizes what a true friend Aesop is. And of course, as in all classic romantic screwball comedies, she realizes Aesop is indeed the perfect man for her. Actress must have wonderful comic skills. Strong belt, mix and head voice. (Role cast understudy
only)

DELPHINIA (40s) Sexy, curvaceous sensation. Manipulative and conniving. She worked her way up from a chorus girl to controlling King Croesus. She uses her feminine wiles to achieve her ambitions at any cost. She takes control of Philocalus when he arrives, using him as an accomplice and for her personal pleasure. When Aesop appears in the kingdom, she is finally faced with a worthy adversary and must go to every length to thwart him. While she is clever, ambitious and dangerous, she is ultimately outsmarted by Aesop. Strong Broadway belt and must dance well.

CATASTROPHE (late 40s – mid 50s) She is selfish and imperious. She is never wrong and has her husband, Xanthus, completely under her thumb. She has a sharp wit and a stylish manner. She demands the center of attention whenever she appears. She’s sexually charged, but not with her husband. Comic character actress and handsome woman. This character is not a gargoyle. Mezzo soprano.

Disneys' NEWSIES
Director-Richard Sabellico,Choreographer- Charlie Sutton

Performance Dates- July 17, 2019-August 10, 2019. First rehearsal July 2, 2019

Jack Kelly
The charismatic leader of the Manhattan newsies, is an orphaned dreamer and artist who yearns to get out of the crowded streets of New York and make a better life for himself out West. Fiercely protective of his best friend, Crutchie, and strongly loyal, Jack isn’t afraid to use his voice to attain better conditions for the working kids of New York City. Though living on the streets has given him a tough-guy exterior, Jack has a big heart and can demonstrate a sweet vulnerability – especially when it comes to bantering with a certain female reporter. Must have a great pop tenor voice and sense of physicality.
Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: Bb2

Crutchie
A dedicated newsie with a bum leg that’s painful, but helps sell more papes. Though he walks with the assistance of a crutch, Crutchie doesn’t let it define him; when in a jam, Jack Kelly’s best friend relies on a goofy- sweet sense of humor and optimistic resilience. Crutchie is the heart of the resistance. Though his movement will suggest his bum leg, Crutchie should still be included in the dance numbers.
Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: C3

Davey
Les’s straight-laced, bright big brother starts selling newspapers to help his family earn a living, but becomes swept up in the fervor of the strike. A leader in his own right who is learning to use his voice to uplift others, Davey is the brains of the resistance.
Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: D3

Les
Davey’s cheeky younger brother, is inspired by the freedom of the newsies and loves their independent lifestyle. A precocious and natural newsie, Les is an intuitive salesboy and a pint-sized charmer. He should present as younger than the other newsies.
Age: 10 to 15
Vocal range top: Bb3 Vocal range bottom: Db3

Katherine Plumber
An ambitious young reporter, works hard to make a name for herself as a legitimate journalist in a time when women aren’t taken seriously. Quick, funny, and resourceful, she boldly captures the voice of a new generation rising in her coverage of the newsies’ strike. While she generally has no time for cocky, streetwise young men, she makes an exception for Jack Kelly. Though she only has a brief dance solo in “King of New York,” Katherine should have a great contemporary pop voice with a high belt – diction is key.
Age: 17 to 20
Vocal range top: F5 Vocal range bottom: A3

Joseph Pulitzer
A pompous businessman through and through, owns the World and is concerned solely with the bottom line. Katherine’s no-nonsense father, Pulitzer doesn’t sympathize with the strikers, but he does eventually – and grudgingly – respect Jack.
Age: 35 to 50
Vocal range top: F4 Vocal range bottom: C3

Medda Larkin
Inspired by vaudeville performer Aida Overton Walker, this big-voiced saloon singer and star of the Bowery offers her theater as a safe haven for the newsies. An astute entertainer with great comic delivery, she’s a good friend to Jack and stands firmly behind the newsies in their fight for justice.
Age: 25 to 45
Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: F3

Bunsen
Pulitzers bookkeeper. Comes up with the idea to raise the newsies price per paper
Age:35 to 50

Snyder
The crooked and sinister warden of The Refuge, a filthy and horrible orphanage.
Age: 45-65
