Seeking (all roles are available):
Theatre’s casting note: “This is a world-premiere play and casting is extremely open. These descriptions are just a start, and the actors who fill the roles will originate them, creating even more specific characterizations. Looking for actors who are excited to work directly with the playwright and the director to develop these characters and make them their own.”
Josh:
20s-40s. Former top-notch interrogator and espionage expert for the CIA. Was at the top of his career, and then his personal life fell apart and he went on an extended bender. Rugged, tough and sexy, but broken. A modern spy-thriller hero gone bad -- think Richard Hannay from “The 39 Steps” in a serious drama. Recently fired from the CIA, Zach has brought him back in for a special assignment.
Zach:
20s-40s. Josh’s best friend and former subordinate at the CIA. Smart, but not as intuitive as Josh. Upset that his friend and boss has gone down a bad path, and disappointed that he and Sunny are no longer together. Trying to break a mole at the agency, and knows he can’t do it without Josh at this point. Has tried everything else, and is desperate to get the mole to talk. Has conflicted feelings about the way the CIA has treated his best friend and about his national loyalty, but is trying to do the right thing.
Ford:
Any age, but author believes it may be best to cast him as 20s-40s. Tough-guy underling when Josh was at the CIA; has always hated Josh. He’s the “muscle” the CIA brings out when using “enhanced interrogation techniques”. Will do whatever it takes to get the truth out of a suspect. Although he hates he has very little scruples when it comes to his co-workers. Hates anyone who tries to put anything past him. Quick-tempered. Has a physically intimidating presence (actor can be large and imposing, but not a requirement).
Sunny:
20s-40s. Josh’s ex-wife and former partner at the CIA (still works there). Pretty and sexy; can be cast as beautiful, but doesn’t have to be. Sunny is just as smart and quick-witted as Josh, and it should be clear that they can go head-to-head with each other. Very much his match. Also knows how to deal with Ford. Think Angelina Jolie’s character in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”. Not happy with the environment at work. Very independent thinker and can back up her opinions with facts. Logical and clever, but stubborn and not easily swayed to change her mind.
Theatre’s statement: “All ethnicities are encouraged to attend. New City Stage Company is an equal opportunity employer that encourages and fosters nontraditional and alternative casting.”
