OTHER

About the play: It was shocking for audiences to watch Nora leave her husband and children in A DOLL'S HOUSE, the 1879 play by Henrik Ibsen. How shocking will it be for us, in 2022, to dive deeper into the reasons behind that fateful choice in Lucas Hnath’s bitingly funny, Tony-nominated stand-alone sequel to Ibsen’s revolutionary masterpiece?

BREAKDOWN

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Please prepare the side for the character you are auditioning for at https://www.dropbox.com/sh/vszdloy1uc5s5my/AAAOlTSFmT08nVcMH62kn4QNa?dl=0 . See specific character side information below. Please slate your name, state whether you are Equity or not, state whether or not you are fully vaccinated, and let us know your location. If a reader is not accessible to you, you may perform a monologue in the style of the show.

NORA: pp. 26 - 27: Start: This happens. End: …because there won't be anything to be jealous of.

TORVALD: PP. 42-43: (Cut all of Nora's interstitial lines). Start: I should have left you…. End: I wish I didn't take it like I took it.

ANNE MARIE: pp. 52-53 (Cut Nora's interstitial line, We weren't). Start: I'm really pissed at you. End: I know you know how to use it.

EMMY: pp. 66-67. (Cut Nora's interstitial lines, yes - , gloom--? and oh, Bob. Start: My brothers told me. End: because he thought crying made his face look fat.

SEEKING:

NORA – Female, 40 – 50, any ethnicity. Fiercely independent and confident. A resourceful woman returning to a life she abandoned to ensure her future. And it may break her. Even when she seems a bit too smug or certain, we must like her.

TORVALD – Male, 45 - 55, any ethnicity. A gentle, mostly affable single father shocked by the arrival of his wife 15 years after she left. Being confronted with Nora rocks his world. Maybe he’s still in love with her, maybe he isn’t. When he loses it, we are surprised.

ANNE MARIE – Female, 60 – 70, any ethnicity. Really exhausted, but making it work. Nora’s former nanny, replacement mother to Nora’s children, and the person who picked up the pieces after Nora left. She thought she’d never see Nora again, but she does. And she’s pissed.

EMMY - Female, 20 - 25, any ethnicity. Confident, charming, able to get what she needs. She's Nora's daughter for sure. It's been 15 years since Nora let her, and Emmy has not forgiven her mother. But she needs Nora now.
