Set in the present, in NYC. Nicole Horowitz, a 17-year-old overachieving student at Stuyvesant High, clings to her studious routines, despite the recent suicide of her rebellious twin sister Natasha. As she goes through her day, Nicole encounters adults who don’t understand her, and Natasha’s friends, who despise her. Nicole is especially unsettled by flashbacks of scenes of conflicts she had with Natasha over the years. These scenes push Nicole to a new appreciation of her sister, and a deeper understanding of herself. By the end of the play, Nicole is ready to let her sister live on through her.
Seeking:
Nicole:
17. Very smart, very studious young woman. Control freak. Works extremely hard to combat her anxiety about her future and her deep loneliness. Misses the closeness she had with Natasha when they were young, and resents the changes in Natasha. Wants to help Natasha be like her.
Natasha:
17. Very smart, but a terrible student. Actual freak. Politically active. Enjoys her wild behavior, but is sincere about her philosophical choices to live outside of the boundaries of society. Loves her sister deeply, even though she feels rejected by Nicole’s self-righteous views.
Maddie:
17. Natasha’s friend since childhood. A more extreme version of Natasha. Very angry about the loss of her friend.
Darius:
17. Natasha and Maddie’s friend. A cross-dresser, of ambiguous sexuality. Has been bullied, but prefers not to fight about anything. Also upset about Natasha’s death.
Producers’ statement: “All ethnicities welcome.”
