Central Connecticut State University Black Box Theatre presents Oscar Wildes endlessly entertaining comedy The Importance of Being Earnest. This timeless world classic is an unmissable opportunity to see what the London Telegraph has called the most perfect comedy in the English language. Oscar Wildes wildly entertaining comedy sparkles with dazzling wordplay and hilariously unlikely situations. This trivial comedy for serious people features two carefree bachelors, Jack and Algernon, each with a carefully hidden double life. But when Algernon discovers that Jack has been posing as a man named Ernest to escape to the city, he promptly travels to Jacks country estate to pose as the fictional figure himself! Silliness ensues with whimsical ingnues, jealous fiances, indomitable dowagers, and the most famous handbag in theatre history. First produced in 1895 this play moves away from previous Wilde structures of melodrama and plays more with satire and farce. Earnest continues to be Wildes most popular work and is continually revived. A revival by the Roundabout Theatre Company on Broadway garnered three Tony Award nominations in 2011. Numerous Films and TV movies have been released since 1946. The 2002 film featured Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon, and Judi Dench and retained some of the original script that had been cut from the first stage production. Several other adaptations include musicals, radio productions, and an opera.
