CAPA Presents DANCEBRAZIL On 4/13

By:

For more than 30 years, DanceBrazil has thrilled audiences across the US and throughout the world with its dazzling artistry inspired by the cultural tapestry of Brazil. Whether in the streets or on stage in the most prestigious theaters, the dancers and musicians of DanceBrazil never fail to enthrall audiences with their unique fusion of Afro-Brazilian movement, contemporary dance, and Capoeira, the traditional dance/martial arts form that had its origins in Africa and evolved in colonial Brazil as a means of fighting enslavement.

CAPA presents DanceBrazil at the Ohio Theatre (39 E. State St.) on Tuesday, April 13, at 8 pm. Tickets are $30, $25, and $20 at the Ohio Theatre Ticket Office (39 E. State St.), all Ticketmaster outlets, and www.ticketmaster.com. To purchase tickets by phone, please call (614) 469-0939 or (800) 745-3000. The Ohio Theatre Ticket Office will open two hours prior to the performance. Students between the ages of 13-19 may purchase $5 High Five tickets while available. This Caliente Series performance is made possible through the generous support of the Hyatt on Capitol Square and series sponsors David and Mo Meuse.

In 1975, Founder and Artistic Director Jelon Vieira introduced traditional Afro-Brazilian dance and Capoeira to the US. In the country on a dance scholarship, Vieira had come from his native Bahia, a state in northeastern Brazil boasting the largest population of Brazilians of African descent. During his studies, Vieira developed his own artistic vision, a fusion of Bahian culture and artistry with elements of contemporary modern dance.

The launching of DanceBrazil came at the suggestion of the late Alvin Ailey, who had encouraged Jelon Vieira to begin his own company during the 1970s. His enthusiasm, combined with Vieira's desire to share the power and beauty of Afro-Brazilian culture, especially Capoeira, with audiences throughout the world. Vieira's intuitive sense that the experiencing of these traditions could bring people of diverse backgrounds together and his continued commitment to help young people through the medium of dance collectively motivated him to launch DanceBrazil.

For more than 30 years, DanceBrazil has thrilled audiences across the US, Brazil, and throughout the world with its dazzling artistry which bridges Bahia and the US. DanceBrazil promotes Brazilian-American cultural exchange by spreading Afro-Brazilian culture through its educational, presenting, and producing activities.
