Based on a novel, the musical tells the story of each of The Players and how they won adoration with bawdy comedy, while often longing for more. Based on a true story, I Am My Own Wife tells (through the talents of one actor) the fascinating tale of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a real-life German transvestite who managed to survive both the Nazi onslaught and the repressive East German Communist regime. This drama represents the BoHo value of Freedom.
Ten characters pair up in ten different scenes of sexual pleasure and/or despair. One character from each scene moves on to the next, seemingly dumping his old partner in favor of new prey. It begins with a prostitute soliciting an unwilling soldier, circling from the 30's to the present, ending where the story began.
