Hershey Area Playhouse Presents Tennessee Williams's THE GLASS MENAGERIE

Hershey Area Playhouse is proud to present a highlight of its 20th Anniversary Season, The Glass Menagerie, written by the celebrated Tennessee Williams.

Williams's autobiographical "memory play" looks at the Wingfield family. A faded remnant of Southern gentility, Amanda Wingfield lives in poverty in a dingy St. Louis apartment. Abandoned by her husband, Amanda comforts herself with recollections of her earlier, more gracious life in Blue Mountain when she was pursued by "gentlemen callers." Her son Tom, a poet with a job in a warehouse, longs for adventure and escape from his mother's suffocating embrace, while Laura has her glass menagerie and her memories. Amanda is desperate to find her daughter a husband, but when the long-awaited gentleman caller does arrive, Laura's romantic illusions are crushed. A drama of great tenderness and beauty, The Glass Menagerie holds a place as a classic work of modern American drama.

The Glass Menagerie opened in Chicago in 1944 and went to Broadway in 1955. It was an immediate success and won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. Two critics Williams credited for giving him his start wrote that the play had "the stamina of success..." and it had "the courage of true poetry...."

"The Glass Menagerie is a great American classic, and anytime we get to do Tennessee Williams - who is one of the most important playwrights in American theatre - it's a gift and a privilege," said director Lew Silverman. "I think our opportunity to introduce new generations to Tennessee Williams and keep him alive for our audience is important. There's no other playwright who you'd say, 'he's like a Tennessee Williams.' He's absolutely unique."

The actors that bring this classic play to life are: Nancy Parson as Amanda Wingfield; Kim Greenawalt as Laura Wingfield; Tyler Chick as Tom Wingfield; and Adam Estep as Jim O'Connor.

In addition to Silverman, the production team for The Glass Menagerie include Jeff Miller, Producer, Patt Roth, Stage Manager; Carlton Hoke, Scenic Designer; JoEllen Myers, Costume Designer; Stephen Hensel, Lighting Designer; and Renee Swayne-Howard, Property Mistress.

Experience the classic play The Glass Menagerie, running April 4 to 7 and 11 to 14, 2019. Thursday through Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday performances begin at 2 p.m.
