DreamWrights Center for Community Arts Presents BECKY'S NEW CAR Image

Guest Director Kirk Wisler says no pressure, but it's up to the company of "Becky's New Car" to bring it and pave the way for more adult comedies at DreamWrights Center for Community Arts.

"Becky's New Car" tells the story of Becky Foster in the middle of her mid-life crisis - middle age, middle management, middling marriage and no change on the horizon. Then one night a socially inept and grief-struck millionaire stumbles into her life.

"Women go through many chapters of their lives and cycle through what-if scenarios," said Kelly Kearn who plays the role of Becky. "She takes us on that ride beyond the boundaries of acceptable options to ones that some women may think about but not venture. Becky goes there and comes back to tell the tale."

The play, written by Steven Dietz, is definitely geared toward adults, Wisler said. "It's about coming in and maybe seeing your issues being portrayed comically through someone else. Come in and relax, and leave feeling a little better about life," he said.

This show lifts up the rug that everyone else brushed things underneath, he said. And it's real, Kearn said. "We put all of it out on stage," she said.

Dan Gilbert, who plays the role of Becky's husband Joe, calls the show "hysterical without sacrificing the emotional depth of the characters."

The show will be held Aug. 2, 3, 4, 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. and Aug. 5 & 12 at 3 p.m. in the DreamWrights studio. Concessions will be available for sale, and beer and wine on select nights with a donation. Tickets are available at the door or at DreamWrights.org.

"Experience the life of a woman and the choices that are made as a woman approaches the "invisible" stage of life," Kearn said. "You might be surprised by it all."
