Ithaca College Theatre Presents Their Dance Show, Illuminated Bodies

Ithaca College Theatre will present an original dance show, "Illuminated Bodies." Performances will be held Dec. 6, 8, 9 and 10 at 8 p.m., and Dec. 10 and 11 at 2 p.m. All performances will be held in the Hoerner Theatre in Dillingham Center.

Performed once every four years, Ithaca College Theatre's dance show lights up the stage with four original dance pieces. Assistant professor of theatre arts Lindsay Gilmour has choreographed "Ahhhhh," a modern meditation on movement and its interaction with the five senses, and "Arriving," a duet inspired by bird migration. Dance instructor Amy Walker O'Brien has created two ballet pieces, "Momentum," an intersection of sculpture and energy, and "Once Upon a Time," a glimpse at what might happen at the circus after the audience has gone home. These pieces flow smoothly into one another, encouraging the audience to revel in the wonders of everyday life.

"Illuminated Bodies" includes live and pre-recorded music composed by Chris Seeds, Keir Neuringer and Ithaca College students Lucas Ashby '13 and Grant Carey '13. Carey was approached for the project having composed music for a piece O'Brien created for the Locally Grown Dance Festival. This fall, he has been creating and arranging the pieces during dance rehearsals, creating an intimate relationship between music and movement.

"The music is made for this purpose, I write for the movement, but the dancers are also involved -- improvising and creating a unique, exciting and live piece," Carey said.

Dancers will share the stage with musicians (piano, cello, clarinet and flute) during the performance of the two ballet pieces. Ashby has composed the music that he will be playing live onstage during "Arriving."

The production staff includes set and costume design by Lawrence Moten'12, lighting design by Kay Boshart '12, sound design by Alex Dietz-Kest '14, and technical direction by associate professor of theatre arts Colin Stewart and scene shop supervisor Johnny Kontogiannis. The production stage manager is Genevieve Kersh ''11, and the stage manager is Paula Clarkson '13. The dramaturgs are Kristen Joyce '13 and Ben Shipley '13.

A nationally recognized professional theater-training program, the Department of Theatre Arts attracts students from across the United States. Throughout the production season, undergraduate students present all aspects of theater in a professional model.
