During her musically spectacular performance at 54 Below last night Ann playfully introduces her pianist as George Gershwin. Ted Rosenthal may probably be able to play Gershwin's music with more accuracy than the composer did. However, I'm sure George Gershwin would never be able to accompany Ann as good as Ted Rosenthal does.

If you're more on the side of the music than the entertainment aspect of a singers show than this is the one for you. Ann sings some of the most important songs In the Great American, Great Contemporary, and Great Callaway Songbook. She thrills audiences with her distinctively moving and poignant style and uses those famed Callaway vocal chords to place notes anywhere and everywhere that make musical sense. When it comes time to swing the partnership of Ted and Ann satisfy the ears of any jazz aficionado and musician. There were cheers after most of her songs, and most loudly from the "experts" at our table. Steven Reineke, (music director of The New York Pops), Ron Able music director to the stars, lyricist Chuck Steffan, entertainer/singer/director Will Nunziata, classical pianist, Eda Sorokoff, and expert by proximity Eric Gabbard.

This show is more about the music than entertainment bits, but Ann Hampton cannot help but be witty, funny, clever, and theatrical when she is on stage.

There are many momentous moments in her performance which I will not point out because they were so touching that words would not be adequate to describe them. You have to be there to feel the love in the room. I guess Len Cariou's remark as he left his table "It was a privilege to be here" says it best.
