Guy Davis TRIO FEATURING Terri White

Monday, March 8 at 9:30 PM

"Talent and charisma...Davis performs with authority." - New York Times

"No one puts together a tangier salad from the mixed greens of African American music quite like Guy Davis." - Mojo

"impeccable craftsmanship and lyric vision" - Living Blues

Recently featured on National Public Radio and CBS' Late Show with David Letterman, Guy Davis is a musician, composer, actor, director, writer and consummate performer. He's got some Blind Willie McTell and some Fats Waller, some Buddy Guy and some Taj Mahal. He's got some Zora Neale Hurston and some Garrison Keillor. But most importantly-Guy Davis is a bluesman. The blues permeate every corner of Davis' creativity. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to reviving the traditions of acoustic blues and bringing them to as many ears as possible through the material of the great blues masters, African American stories, and his own original songs, stories and performance pieces.

Red House Records is pleased to announce the February 10, 2009 release of Sweetheart Like You, the new CD from award-winning bluesman Guy Davis. Produced by long-time collaborator John Platania (Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Chip Taylor), it is a classic mix of acoustic blues and soulful originals. The album is his most personal yet and is an impressive follow-up to his highly lauded Skunkmello, which earned him 3 Blues Award nominations and a rare 5-star review in the jazz/blues magazine DownBeat. $20

GIRLYMAN

Wednesday, March 10 at 9:30 PM

"Soaring harmonies, social consciousness, and impressive musical prowess...Girlyman's bittersweet approach to the human condition will strike a chord regardless of the listener."- San Francisco Chronicle

"In the field of pop group vocals, Girlyman is in the rarest of company...a luxurious sonic bubble bath for the ears."- Vermont Guardian

Can the members of Girlyman read each other's minds? Sometimes it seems so. Onstage they often finish one another's sentences or burst into improvised three-part ditties so tight they seem rehearsed. Truth is, the Atlanta-based trio has had years to develop this rapport. Doris Muramatsu and Tylan Greenstein became best friends in second grade. The two met Nate Borofsky in college at a talent show, and since then they've been creating their own unique language of three-part harmony. Informed by 60s vocal groups like Simon & Garfunkel and The Mamas and the Papas, and infused with years of classical and jazz training, Girlyman's songs are a dance of melody and suspensions - an irresistible blend of acoustic, Americana, and rock The Village Voice calls "really good, really unexpected, and really different."

Everything's Easy, Girlyman's fourth studio album, is the band's most intimate and sophisticated effort. The cover, a playful paint-by-numbers scene, suggests a world where one creates reality with only a brushstroke. Yet much of Girlyman's rare appeal is a willingness to see the shadow side of its own idealism. A placid suburban childhood unfolds amid the mounting pressure of the Watergate era in "Easy Bake Ovens," while the "one hundred billion metric tons" of New York City rise beside the wide, unburdened river in "Hudson." Some songs highlight Girlyman's trademark playfulness, as in the Tin Pan Alley tribute "My Eyes Get Misty," while the swirling counterpoint of "Wherever You Keep" strains musically and lyrically for the light. Self-produced and engineered, Everything's Easy was recorded with a single, ten thousand dollar microphone, financed by fan donations. This microphone, along with the work of Grammy-winning mixer Ben Wisch, has created an immeasurably rich sound.

Most recently, Girlyman has been collaborating with comedian Margaret Cho, co-writing songs for her upcoming album, Guitarded. Of Girlyman, Cho says, "They seamlessly blend folk, country, pop, and rock, and they genre bend as fearlessly and flawlessly as they gender-bend. It's the music of my heart and soul. Girlyman is the future and the past and the present." $20

MNOZIL BRASS

Thursday, March 11 at 7:00 PM

"A brass ensemble with a difference!...A trip to a Mnozil Brass concert is almost impossible to describe in words. If you want to know what to expect, expect the unexpected and, if you get the chance to see them, seize it. Guaranteed is an evening of superlative entertainment blended with great humor." - British Bandsman

From 1996 on the seven musicians of Mnozil Brass started to give regular concerts. First in Austria, then Switzerland and Germany. Now the band is touring all over the world, about 120 concerts a year. They performed already at the Musikverein Wien, the KKL Luzern, the Royal Albert Hall in London, the RuhrTriennale, the Salzburg Festival, Burgtheater Vienna etc. The ensemble have released 7 CDs and 4 DVDs. $20

Julian Fleisher

Thursday, March 11 at 9:00 PM

"I have seen the future of vocal Jazz! He's got a marvelous, resonate baritone, with impeccable intonation, and a wonderful choice of material...talented, funny and hip."- LA Jazz Scene

Before the art of song was divided into narrow stylistic slices, before there was Jazz or Pop or Rock, there was Nightclub Singing. Like Sammy Davis, Jr, Ethel Water and Mel Tormé before him, Julian Fleisher mixes masterful interpretations of a wide range of popular songs with kick-ass showmanship and a generously endowed band that-- as the Washington Post put it -- "blew the roof off of Joe's Pub." $20 in advance / $25 at the door

LAS RUBIAS DEL NORTE: CD RELEASE

Friday, March 12 at 7:30 PM

Las Rubias del Norte is a Brooklyn-based international collective which plays boleros, cha-cha-cha, cumbias, huaynos, lieder, and cowboy songs. Fronted by classically trained singers Allyssa Lamb and Emily Hurst, the band mixes musicians from the US, France and Colombia who all look back to the Latin motherland most of them never had. La Rubias del Norte's second album, Panamericana (out March 14th on barbès records) draws its inspiration from all across the Americas, and plays like a dreamy soundtrack where cha-cha-cha's and boleros mix with classical harmonies and cowboy music. The result is a collection of thirteen songs, each of which is a "sparkling gem" (The New Yorker.)

Some of the songs on Panamericana have been heard the world over, some are known solely within their national or regional borders, while others have hardly ever been heard at all. They include Volver, Volver, a Mexican ranchera anthem of sorts; the Peruvian Huayno Corazon, Corazon, heard by chance in a small mountain town in Peru as well as a Dominican-tinged version of Francoise Hardy's Le Temps de l'Amour and Blue Prairie, one of the Sons of the Pioneers Cowboy classic. Despite the continental hopscotching, the striking aspect of Panamericana is its homogeneity. The album flows seamlessly from song to song, from country to country, never giving in to the dangers of imitation or to the lure of false authenticity. Las Rubias have created an unmistakably recognizable sound which remains a nostalgic throwback to a time and place mostly imagined. Las Rubias del Norte feature Taylor Bergren-Chrisman (bass) Olivier Conan (Cuatro & Vocals) Timothy Quigley and Greg Stare (percussion) and Giancarlo Vulcano (Guitar). $15

RAUL MIDON

Friday, March 12 at 9:30 PM

Raul previews songs from his upcoming release Synthesis, due out spring 2010 on Decca/Universal. Synthesis was recording this past spring in LA with legendary producer Larry Klein.

Midón made a name for himself touring throughout the U.S., Europe, and Japan, releasing his second solo album, A World Within a World, in 2007, which, with its uplifting lyrics about social consciousness and insinuating grooves, went a long way toward further establishing Midón as an artist "who contributes something lasting to the musical landscape," as NPR said of him. Guitar Player called Midón "one of those rare musical forces that reminds how strong and deep the connection between man and music can sometimes be." Synthesis will be released by Universal in fall 2009 in Europe and Japan and in Spring 2010 in the United States. $15
