Jeff Davis BAND: CD RELEASE
(Jeff Davis, drums, cymbals, compositions; Tony Barba, tenor and soprano saxophone; Kirk Knuffke, trumpet; Ben Gerstein, trombone; Jon Goldberger, guitar; Eivind Opsvik, bass) Jeff Davis Band CD Release of We Sleep Outside on Loyal Label. On his debut album, We Sleep Outside, drummer/composer Jeff Davis showcases his command of a deeply focused and distinctly improvisational stylE. Davis, who "has a steady profile in left-of-center New York jazz circles," according to Nate Chinen of The New York Times, is a confident performer who guides his band just to The Edge of chaos while at the same time exercising focus and restraint. Davis' band has been working together since 2006, and features some of New York's great improvisers, including Tony Barba, Kirk Knuffke, Ben Gerstein, Jon Goldberger, and Eivind Opsvik. Together, the group blurs the line between composition and improvisation, with equal focus on collective improvisation and the individual soloist. It is just this approach that results in a sound both minimalist in construction and intensely complex in approach.

JASON RIGBY QUINTET
(Jason Rigby, tenor saxophone; Russ Johnson, trumpet; Michael Holober, piano; Cameron Brown, bass; Anthony Pinciotti, drums) Jason Rigby has been hailed as "a truly lyrical musician" and "New York's rising star of tenor sax." His unique voice deftly combines many influences - critics recognize the creative mindset of Wayne Shorter, the energy of John Coltrane, and the elasticity and compositional style of Ornette Coleman and Paul Motian - emerging as something wholly new, compelling and yet recognizable. His leader releases "Translucent Space" (2006) and "The Sage" (2009), Fresh Sound Records, received stellar reviews and feature Rigby originals in a larger format, the latter of a quintet. This TRIO outing features a whole new collection of compositions penned exclusively for this band, and brings forth a fresh expression of the celebrated tradition of tenor trio.
