Caribbean Film Series Festival Presents COCOTE

COCOTE will be screened at the Caribbean Film Series Festival on Sunday, March 17, 4:15pm at the BAM Rose Cinemas.

A rapturous crime fable set in the Dominican Republic, Nelson Carlo De Los Santos Arias' Cocote follows Alberto, a kind-hearted gardener returning home to attend his father's funeral. When he discovers that a powerful local figure is responsible for his father's death, Alberto realizes that he's been summoned by his family to avenge the murder. It's an unthinkable act - especially for him, an Evangelical Christian. But as pressure mounts, he sees few ways out. Questions of faith, tradition and honor course through this electrifying film, which, seemingly at the speed of thought itself, jumps between film formats, colors, and aspect ratios, radically envisioning a community torn asunder by senseless violence.

Nelson Carlo de Los Santos Arias is a Dominican filmmaker. He studied at the Edinburgh School of Art and the California Institute of the Arts. His films include Pareces una carreta de esas que no la para ni lo' bueye (13) and Santa Teresa y otras historias(15). Cocote (17) is his latest film.

Caribbean cinema is at a highpoint critically and artistically, in the ways its filmmakers' thrill, entertain, and inform audiences globally. Our new four-day festival here at BAM, not only marks the five-year anniversary of the Caribbean Film Series but also provides an unparalleled platform to reflect on the Caribbean and its diasporic experiences, in new and unconventional ways. No 'Jafaican' accents here, our selections are the truth.

The series begins on March 14th and it is presented by Third Horizon Film Festival, Caribbean Film Academy, The Luminal Theater and BAM Film.
