Paddle Along with Pierce Cedar Creek Institute This Weekend in Western Michigan

Hastings, MI -- The appearance of late summer blooms are reminders that it's time to enjoy the last few sun-soaked days of the year as summer draws to a close. This Saturday, August 22 is one of the final chances for outdoor summer fun with Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, during a paddle trip down the Thornapple River.

Rescheduled from June due to flooding, this trip shoves off at historic Charlton Park and floats down the scenic Thornapple River about 8 miles, ending in Hastings. This trip allows paddlers to experience Barry County as never before -- from the water -- and is suitable for paddlers of all ages and skill levels. Never canoed or kayaked before? The morning begins with instruction on basic paddling techniques to get participants moving in no time. Expert paddler? Bring your own canoe or kayak for a discounted rate.

"Paddling is an excellent way to enjoy time outside because when boating, especially on rivers, paddlers encounter the environment differently. The environment that a paddler interacts with is a relatively narrow corridor, but bends in the river provide new views and constantly changing scenery," says Matt Dykstra, program manager at the Institute and guide for this trip. "Not to mention, it's great exercise!"

Registration includes boat, personal flotation device rental, transportation to the launch, instruction, and snacks for the 3.5 hour trip. Participants may bring their own canoe or kayak for a discounted rate. Please call Pierce Cedar Creek Institute for details. Registration is required.
