Overlook Pointe Homes Achieve LEED-H Silver Certification

Forty-one homes at Overlook Pointe have received LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in addition to their already achieved ENERGY STAR certification, making AVR Homebuilders the only builder in the region to offer ENERGY STAR and LEED certified homes.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a program providing third-party verification of green buildings, and a recognized standard for the construction industry to assess the environmental sustainability of building designs. LEED for Homes is a certification program recognizing homes that are designed and built to be energy and resource efficient, creating a healthier and more durable living environment.

Overlook Pointe, an AVR community of condominiums and townhomes overlooking the Hudson River in West Fishkill, is the most recent addition to the Waterfront at Fishkill, also home to Streamside Knolls, Holly Ridge and Rivercrest. "It is a great accomplishment to be recognized by the USGBC as one of their LEED-certified communities," said Mark Eickelbeck, Chief Operating Officer at AVR Homebuilders. All certified homes at Overlook Pointe feature optimum energy efficiency and are approximately 35% more efficient than standard new homes. This includes high-performance insulation, high-efficiency heating, cooling and domestic hot-water systems, and ENERGY STAR qualified windows, appliances and lighting. All certified units possess dedicated, fresh-air ventilation and employ optimum moisture-management strategies as well as radon-resistant construction techniques to ensure indoor air quality.

Certified homes also offer water-conserving bathroom fixtures to achieve high water efficiency. To be considered LEED-certified, the use of environmentally friendly products is required. Green Label Plus-certified carpet is installed throughout all units and low VOC paints are used on all interior walls.

Site development becomes an integral part of receiving the USGBC LEED certification. As part of the rating system there must be access to open spaces along the Hudson River, minimized site disturbance by clustering the home within the development, large, maintained areas of open space, as well as the use of drought tolerant, non-invasive plants in the landscaping.

This is not the first award that AVR Homebuilders has received. The company's recently completed waterfront community of Powell Cove Estates in North College Point, Queens, achieved LEED Silver certification for five of its newest buildings, and each of the 202 condos received ENERGY STAR certification. AVR Homebuilders also received the US EPA's "Partner of the Year-New Home Builder" award in 2012 and 2013, making it the only builder in the country to have received this award in its category for both years.
