Peter Mattei Steps Into the Met's DON GIOVANNI, 10/13

Peter Mattei will sing the title role in Mozart's Don Giovanni for the new production premiere this Thursday evening, October 13, replacing Mariusz Kwiecien, who injured his back at the final dress rehearsal today.

Mattei will open La Scala's season in a new production of Don Giovanni on December 7. Mattei performed this role in the Met's 2008-09 season and at La Scala in 2009-10.

Mattei, who is currently at the Met singing the title role in Rossini's IL Barbiere di Siviglia will be replaced in that opera's performances on Tuesday, October 11 and Friday, October 14 by Rodion Pogossov. Pogossov was already scheduled to sing Figaro in the October 26, 29, February 4, 8, 11, 15, and 18 performances.

Pogossov, a graduate of the Met's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, last sang the role of Figaro in this production during the Met's 2009-10 season.

The new production of Don Giovanni, conducted by Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi and directed by Michael Grandage, also stars Marina Rebeka in her Met debut as Donna Anna, Barbara Frittoli as Donna Elvira, Mojca Erdmann in her Met debut as Zerlina, Ramón Vargas as Don Ottavio, Luca Pisaroni as Leporello, Joshua Bloom as Masetto, and Štefan Kocán as the Commendatore.
