"World class." Los Angeles Times "Subtle yet sizzling...shimmers" AllMusicGuide
"Souter's crystalline contralto and impeccable phrasing are mighty arrows in her quiver, but it is her ability to become one with a song, finding its intrinsic core and allowing its sentiments to grow organically, that enables her to score successive bull's eyes...." Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes
London-born, New York-based Anglo-Trinidadian vocalist, composer, and lyricist, Tessa Souter (soo-ter) uniquely infuses jazz with the soul and passion of Celtic, Flamenco, Indian and Middle Eastern music. "Striking, soulful, enchanting" [Washington Post], "expressive, full of passion [Philadelphia Inquirer], "broadly imaginative", [New York Times], "compelling and utterly original" [Jazzwise], the award-winning singer has been critically acclaimed as much for her expressive style as for her "truly beautiful voice, [which] really serves great lyrics, using the beauty of her voice to unearth and get to the core of songs." [Sirrius Radio]. The Rochester City Paper said of her 2007 debut at the Rochester International Jazz Festival. "It's ... a particularly exhilarating feeling to witness a great performance by a relatively unknown singer like Tessa Souter. Judging from the ovations she received Saturday night, the entire audience felt the same way." Her return engagement in 2009 was a smash hit. Her first CD, the self-produced Listen Love (Nara), won critical raves for her "crystal clear voice and diamond cut phrasing" [Philadelphia Inquirer] and "direct, soulful sound" [Village Voice]. Her sophomore CD, Nights of Key Largo, produced by Todd Barkan and Tetsuo Hara for the Japanese audiophile label, Venus, was recorded with all-stars Kenny Werner, Billy Drummond, Jay Leonhart, Joel Frahm, and Romero Lubambo, and won the coveted Gold Disc review in January 2009's Swing Journal. Her latest CD, Obsession
-- a multicultural banquet that reflects her African, Indian, and English bloodlines, as well as her American present -- was recorded with violinist Todd Reynolds, accordion player Victor Prieto, bassist Gary Wang, and Sonia Kitchell alumni, guitarist Jason Ennis and drummer Conor Meehan.
