Very Young People's Concerts Conclude with 'Building Blocks'

The New York Philharmonic Very Young People's Concerts (VYPCs), for children ages 3 to 6, will conclude its 13th season Sunday, June 3, 2018, at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and Monday, June 4 at 10:30 a.m. at Merkin Concert Hall, 129 West 67th Street. The program, titled "Building Blocks," is the third installment in Philharmonic Playdates, the season's theme that imagines playdates with the Orchestra. Hosted by Philharmonic Associate Principal Viola Rebecca Young, the program will feature Mozart's Flute Quartet No. 4, performed by Philharmonic flutist Mindy Kaufman, violinist Marié Rossano, violist Rémi Pelletier, and cellist Patrick Jee. Designer and director Doug Fitch - with whom the Philharmonic has collaborated on several acclaimed staged productions - has designed and directed the Very Young People's Concerts since January 2017.

The VYPCs are designed by Philharmonic musicians working with faculty from Teachers College of Columbia University to introduce young children to classical music through games, active listening, and hands-on music-making. Before each concert, musicians are stationed throughout Merkin Concert Hall to greet families and lead musical activities on the day's theme. After each performance, children have an opportunity to try orchestral instruments themselves.

Support for Very Young People's Concerts is provided by Evalyn E. and Stephen E. Milman and The Brodsky Family Foundation.

Programs are supported, in part, by public funds from New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
