SAN FRANCISCO, June 28- The San Francisco Symphony and Director of Summer Concerts Edwin Outwater perform a free outdoor concert on Sunday, July 24 at 12 noon on the grassy plaza in front of the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal at Pier 27, located on the Embarcadero at the foot of Lombard Street. The Orchestra performs a concert of Russian music, including Shostakovich's Festive Overture, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, and Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 with pianist Makoto Ozone. Audience members are encouraged to bring blankets and picnics to enjoy during the performance. Valet bike parking will be available.

Brought up in a musically rich environment, Makoto Ozone taught himself organ at a very young age. Ozone turned his attention towards jazz piano at the age of twelve after attending an Oscar Peterson concert. He moved to the United States in 1980 to study jazz composition and arranging at Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1983, Ozone graduated at the top of his class and gave a solo recital at Carnegie Hall. He became the first Japanese musician to sign an exclusive contract with CBS. In 2014, he toured Asia with the New York Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert, performing Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue in Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, and Yokohama. In recent years, Ozone has been performing works from the classical music repertoire as well, performing concertos by Gershwin, Bernstein, Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninov, and Shostakovich with such ensembles as NDR Sinfonieorchester, Orchestre de chambre de Paris, Orchestre d'Auvergne, Sinfonia Varsovia, NHK Symphony Orchestra, and others. Makoto Ozone is active all over the world, performing in such cities as Vienna, New York, and São Paolo, among others, with such famous jazz musicians as Gary Burton, Chick Corea,Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Branford Marsalis, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Christian McBride, Dave Weckl, and Mike Stern. In 2016, Ozone embarked on a tour entitled Piano Duo Plays "Acoustic," which encompassed 11 concerts with Chick Corea throughout Japan, including two performances of Mozart's Double Piano Concerto with the NHK Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Tadaaki Otaka. Ozone will also perform Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with the SFS on Saturday, July 23 at 7:30pm at Davies Symphony Hall. These will be his second set of performances with the SF Symphony since his debut in the summer of 2014.
