Pianist Angela Cheng to Open CMSD Oakland University Series, 9/20

Canadian pianist Angela Cheng opens the Chamber Music Society of Detroit's third annual Oakland University season series Sunday, September 20 at 3 PM. The concert takes place at Varner Recital Hall, located on the campus of Oakland University at 2200 N Squirrel Road in Rochester. Ms. Cheng will perform Haydn's Sonata No. 60 in C major, Prokofiev's Sonata No. 2 in D minor, and three works by Chopin, the Polonaise-Fantasie, Op. 61 and Ballade Nos. 1 in G minor and 4 in F minor. Angela Cheng was a Gold Medalist of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition, as well as the first Canadian to win the prestigious Montreal International Piano Competition. In addition to regular guest appearances with virtually every orchestra in Canada, Ms. Cheng has performed with the Colorado, Houston, Indianapolis, Saint Louis, San Diego, Utah and Syracuse Symphony Orchestras in the U.S., as well as abroad with Orchestra London, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Minas Gerais/Brazil and the Israel Philharmonic, among others. In 2009, at the invitation of Pinchas Zukerman, Ms. Cheng toured in Europe and China as a member of the Zukerman Chamber Players, and as Mr. Zukerman's collaborative pianist. She has since made multiple tours of the U.S. and Canada, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia with the Zukerman Trio and Pinchas Zukerman, including a recital with Mr. Zukerman at the prestigious Saltzberg Festival, and chamber music concerts at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C, the 92nd Street Y in New York, the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Verbier, Edinburgh and St. Petersburg/Stars of the White Nights Festivals in Europe. Highlights of the 2015/2016 season include performances of the complete Beethoven Concerti cycle with the Victoria Symphony, and tours worldwide with the Zukerman Trio.

The CMSD's 2015-2016 Oakland University Series consists of four concerts. Subscriptions are available at a discounted series rate of $100 for adults and $50 for students. Upcoming concerts, all taking place on Sundays at 3 PM, include:

Works by Brahms, Schubert, Bernstein and Sculthorpe

January 17, 2016: Shanghai Quartet with David Small, baritone
