Manfred Honeck to Trade Pittsburgh for Chicago, 12/11

PITTSBURGH-Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Music Director Manfred Honeck returns to Chicago to lead the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on December 11-13 and 16 in a program featuring Beethoven's beloved Symphony No. 7. Honeck's last appearance with the Chicago Symphony was in 2012 in a program of Strauss, Beethoven and Dvo?ák.

Honeck will conduct three masterpieces from the Austro-German tradition. The lilting dance-rhythms of Haydn's Symphony No. 93 and rambunctious rhythms of Beethoven's Seventh, described by Wagner as "the apotheosis of the dance," frame Richard Strauss' Don Juan. In Strauss' depiction of the legendary lover, a brazen horn call announces a swaggering Don Juan, whose numerous romantic conquests lead to a tragic finale.

Honeck is known for his thoughtful interpretations of Austro-German work; some of which has been captured on recent critically acclaimed releases, such as "Strauss: Tone Poems" on Reference Recording with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and "Johann Strauss," a CD of works by the Strauss family with the Vienna Symphony.
