KATAKA- PERCUSIÓN FLAMENCA Continues Elgar Room's 2010 Season

By:

On Monday 22 February, Ana Yerno, the multi-talented dancer, artist and choreographer, presents the UK premiere of her acclaimed new project for a fiery night of flamenco and percussion. Presented by the Royal Albert Hall this one- off performance, ‘KATAKA- PERCUSIÓN FLAMENCA', continues the Elgar Room's eclectic and diverse 2010 season.

Ana was born with flamenco in her roots and is known not only for her extraordinary talent but her fiery character which inspires a lot of her work. From this she has created a new movement called the 'drumming dance' which uses traditional percussion instruments and has revolutionised flamenco. With her band of nine women and a single man, they take to the stage to interpret the myth of the Amazons and in particular the legend of their last queen, Pentesilea. Sensual, savage and glamorous all at once, Kataka transports us to a warrior world where the combat is the clash of the sexes and cultures and emotions are expressed through instruments, rhythm and sound.

Having trained with flamenco legend La Précy, Ana went on to perform on the most prestigious flamenco scenes all around the world from Barcelona to Tokyo to Mexico. This is only the second performance of ‘KATAKA' having received its world premiere in Madrid where it was described as ‘dance on a knife-edge'. Now Elgar Room audiences will be captivated by this exotic and passionate blend of dance, music and percussion. With costumes designed by renowned Spanish designer Amaya Arzuaga this will also be the perfect complement to the start of London Fashion Week.

Lucy Noble, Head of Programming at the Royal Albert Hall, said - "We are constantly looking to bring innovative and diverse acts into the Elgar Room and attract new audiences to the Royal Albert Hall. We are delighted to have Kataka here as not only will audiences be enthralled by a fusion of genres of the highest quality but it demonstrates how this new space can crossover to suit any type of performance".

This will be the third performance in the Elgar Room in 2010 after an all-standing classical concert with Daniel Hope on 18 January and live flute-beatboxing on the 8 February. Since it re-opened at the end of 2009 it has played host to the intimate Royal Albert Hall series Hush, which gives coverage to unsigned bands and stand-up comedy with Edinburgh favourite Patrick Monahan who returns to the Elgar Room on 19 February with his comedy show for kids.

Tickets for this must-see event are £18 and are available from www.royalalberthall.com Box office: 020 7589 8212
