"Gregory's New York Brigade: Blue-Collar Reserves in Dusty Blue Jackets" (published by Archway Publishing) is the story of a reserve unit, organized late in the Civil War, that played an important part in defeating General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia during and after the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia. These reserves, initially involved in digging trenches, became a fighting unit.

"The book is an example of a newer trend in Civil War literature in which the brigade, rather than the regiment, is the focal point," author Valgene L. Dunham explains. "In addition, the focus is on a reserve unit which entered the war very late. Gregory's Brigade existed from September 1864 only to July 1865."

Dunham adds that the readers will receive an accurate accounting of the history of a reserve brigade ordered to Appomattox to remove weapons of war in that area of Virginia and help keep the peace before local governments were reestablished.

"Hopefully the reader will see the hardships, bravery and courage exhibited by both sides in our national struggle," he says.
