In Out of the Prison House (published by AuthorHouse), author V. D. Carroll explores the ideas of patriotism and hope through the story of a Vietnam-era POW who returns home just before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Out of the Prison House is the story of Ken Bentley, wounded in action and captured near the DMZ, whose sense of honor and allegiance to his wife in America is complicated by his growing love for the Viet woman who befriends him. Though he longs to get home, he faces the reality of having been abandoned by the U.S., presumed dead. Stretched to the limit of personal loss and heartache, he endures physical and emotional torment before he learns to cope with his fate and emerges out of his personal prison house to live a new life.

An excerpt from Out of the Prison House:

"The bleeding from his thigh slowed again. Probably running out of blood ... he would bleed to death, and these VC acted like they had a prize, he thought. No, they're wearing uniforms, not black pajamas - they're NVA. But why hadn't they finished him off? He wasn't high enough rank to be worth much in bartering. He could provide no information, and a signed confession from him would mean nothing. But alive, at least a chance of escape or rescue remained."

Basic themes of survival and love intertwine with those of revenge and redemption to create a "true-to-life story that could belong to any one of the men left behind," according to Ret. Navy Captain Eugene "Red" McDaniel, who was a POW for over six years in Hanoi.
