Police Officer Pens New Memoir

MCCLEARY, Wash.

The new memoir "A View from the Street/River City Policing" (published by iUniverse) tells the story of author S. Henry Knocker, who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks only to become a successful police officer later in life.

Knocker's memoir delves into his earliest memories before his decision to dedicate his life to police work. He discusses his life as a child, as a young man coming to terms with a learning disability and as an Army soldier in Korea.

"A View from the Street/River City Policing" also encompasses a number of Knocker's encounters with social misfits and ordinary people stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some stories employ a lighthearted, humorous tone, while others evoke tragic emotion.

Alongside emotional stories, Knocker vividly explores the root causes of racial tension and how it relates to current events such as the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and the recent police shooting of North Carolina resident Walter Scott, a black man who was unarmed, on April 4.

"I was on swing shift on a cool but rainy night. I was on south 3rd street. I heard a blood curdling scream. It sounded like it came from the downtown area. I reported this to Control and started checking alleys. We had several killings in and around River City, and we believed that a serial killer was at work. Not finding anything, I ended my shift at 11 pm. The next day, I learned that a young woman had been found by the river, several blocks north of where I had heard the scream."

S. Henry Knocker earned a bachelor's degree in police science from Seattle University. Retired, he is a 30-year veteran street cop with a flair for seeing the humorous side of police work. Knocker also served four years of active duty with the United States Army, including 13 months in Korea.
