Nicole Porlier has Neurofibromatosis (otherwise known as NF). NF is a genetic disorder where tumors grow on the skin and wrap themselves around various nerves of the body. NF affects one in three thousand babies. In her book, Bumpy Roads Have Soft Shoulders: Living with NF, she shares her story living with this condition. She shares the struggles and challenges she's been faced with throughout her childhood and young adult life as a result of NF. She hopes to make readers look at life in a different way and recognize that no matter what the circumstances, this should not stop anyone from living life to the fullest.

Porlier inspires with her indomitable will to be and do all things that make life worth living. For those with NF, Nicole Porlier's example and insights into her life, can help in resolving their own issues with NF and teach them how they can live as normally as possible. The author's positivity is reflected in this book, and it shines with her spirit-one that has good helpings of generosity and wisdom. In relating her travel from a defeatist attitude towards life when she was younger to maturity, she reveals the many strengths and supports she needed and found to come out of her shell, take life by the hand and decide to have a fulfilling lifestyle. In a generally superficial world, the author sometimes refuses to accept others' insensitivity and misjudging someone by his or her look-her book, too, was written in the hope that speaking out against this kind of prejudice will make the world more of a better place. Finding love, too, was an important step to turning the corner into healing herself from psychological scars that NF brought-and they have been much harder to remove than the fibromas that have been surgically removed from her body.

Today, Nicole Porlier and husband Denis run their own business called The Glass Half Full, a wine making store. The name also comes from a Goldie Hawn quote ("There are three words I like to repeat to myself, glass half full, just to remind myself to be grateful for everything I have.") and she also uses it when she sometimes needs to find her way back to seeing things in a positive light. In conclusion, Nicole Porlier is living proof that happiness can be found despite NF (or other diseases). For those who need inspiration, Bumpy Roads have Soft Shoulders gives much, making the road to happiness clear and within reach. She has this to say for readers in relating to the world, "When you change your outlook on life and put a big smile on your face, it takes you farther than you could ever have imagined, and nobody will be able to pull you down. As a matter of fact, this advice applies to anyone, not only those affected by NF. A smile on someone's face has the ability to seduce the world."
