The urge to write a book has been with Joyce Schmidt always, and three years ago she decided that, as so many years had passed since she came to Denmark, it would have to be in the form of a biography. The book covers many events including life in Northern Ireland as a small child, the Second World War, her father's sudden death at 49 years, employment at the Ministry of Health, meeting her future Danish husband and falling in love, coming to Denmark as a somewhat naïve Irish colleen, starting a family here and trying to integrate into the Danish community.Fifteen years as secretary at the Australian Embassy in Copenhagen where Joyce was in contact with many interesting aspects of the Danish society in relation to Australia's foreign policy and the immigration programme. Then followed her husband's illness with Parkinson's disease, and Joyce's involvement there as President of the Danish Society. Her interest in Northern Ireland's politics including "the troubles" and Danish social laws, as well as many other aspects of life in Denmark generally, in comparison with Northern Ireland. Joyce hopes that this book may be of interest to many, among others, those who have chosen to live abroad and those who are considering to do so.
