"Why stand when you can sit," propounds bandleader and composer Duke Ellington. As for photographer John Davies, he tenders photography enthusiasts a stunning album of portraits taken all over the world assuming this leisurely temporary halt. Titled Sitting Around, this extraordinary compilation captures picture-perfect moments of people doing ordinary things.

Sitting is, safe to say, as old as mankind. At home, in the office, while waiting, in parks, in coffee shops and the list goes on, it allows for a period of rest as a hiatus of day-to-day living. It varies in forms and styles depending on what one may deem comfortable or practical while taking some time out. While some simply park themselves for a brief pause, others take the stance to perform work, accomplish hobbies, or simply for the benefit of diversion.

Set in the backdrop of various settings the world over, Davies breathtakingly reveals this commonplace act through the art of photography. A globetrotter with a keen eye for perfection, he tenders a chain of picturesque snapshots of people sitting. Proof that despite the mania associated with technology and the demands of times in general life, sitting around is still one of life's genuine pleasures. In its entirety, it is a phenomenal exposition of the hoi polloi from literally all walks of life. With captions kept at a minimum, only to display the geographic locations of the photos, each masterpiece is amenable for personal analysis: the drama, ennui and the splendor of each scene.

The Duke couldn't have been more right indeed. This volume flawlessly depicts an assortment of the act of sitting with exceptional quality and style. From solitary to convivial, from more chairs to no chairs or even empty chairs, and from Central Park, N.Y. to Beilingxiang Park, China, Sitting Around is a spectacular international collection of people taking the weight off their feet.
